Grant Shaffer ’19 Chosen for
2021 Philip Moore Award

Grant Shaffer is this year’s Philip Moore Award honoree. Grant is pursuing a double major in finance and economics and is scheduled to graduate in 2023. He has served the Tau Chapter as Grand Master of Ceremonies and as Risk Manager. He participates in Genesis at UT Austin and plays for Kappa Sigma on the Intramural soccer team. He is from Austin.

Philip Moore was known for his outstanding leadership, service and loyalty to his Tau brothers. A legacy who pledged with the Tau Chapter in 1966, he died in a car accident at age 29. The Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation honors his memory each year by presenting the Philip Moore award to an upper classman who shares the high qualities of leadership, service and brotherhood for which Philip Moore is remembered.

Nick Cerasuolo'19 and Michael Hildner '19 Awarded Walt Schoenvogel Scholarships

Nick Cerasuolo, a finance major scheduled to graduate in 2023, was chosen as a recipient of the Walt Schoenvogel Scholarship. Nick has served the Tau Chapter as Kitchen Liaison and is a member of the UT Silver Spurs. He is from Houston.

Michael Hildner, an electrical and computer engineering major, was also selected as a Walt Schoenvogel scholarship recipient for 2021. Michael has served as a Rush Chair for the Tau Chapter, is a University Honors student, and is Secretary of UT Club Hockey. He is from Austin.

Walt Schoenvogel passed away in 2017 at the age of 63. Those who live in his hometown of Brenham knew him as a successful businessman, community leader, and philanthropist, but he is remembered by his Kappa Sig brothers as an exceptional athlete whose prowess helped bring intramural glory to Tau Chapter, and a loyal friend whose great sense of humor brought much happiness to those around him. To honor his memory, the Walt Schoenvogel Scholarship has been established to benefit a deserving Tau Chapter active each year who aspires to meet the high standards and principles of brotherhood, community service and philanthropy by which Walt himself lived.

Zach Gerhard’18 and Michael Hansen’19 Awarded Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarships

Zach Gerhard, a finance major and, as of December 2021, a UT graduate, was selected as a recipient of the Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarship. Zach has served the Tau Chapter as House Manager, Dallas Rush Captain, Social Committee Member, and Work Program Chairman. He was 2021 Student Body President Campaign Leader, participated in UT Austin Young Life, and served as a Young Life leader at McCallum High School. He also served on the University Securities Investment Team and was on the University Honors roll for six straight semesters. He is from Plano, Texas.

Michael Hansen, a finance major scheduled to graduate in May 2023, was chosen as a recipient of the Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarship. Michael has served Tau Chapter as Grand Procurator (2021) and Grand Master of Ceremonies (2020). He serves as Vice President of the University Finance Association, on the University Co-op Board of Directors, and is a Silver Spur. He is from Houston.

Richard Miller recognized the development of leadership skills as the most important ingredient of success for any person or organization. Miller served as Tau Chapter Grand Master in 1939, was decorated for service in two wars, built a distinguished career as a businessman in his hometown of El Paso, Texas, served as Worthy Grand Master of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the national level and was honored as Tau Man of the Year in 1990. In 2006, the Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation made a commitment to honor his memory each year through a scholarship to benefit outstanding leaders within the Tau Chapter.

Danny Grant ’79 Chosen for Frank Erwin Award
Tau Chapter actives selected TKSEF President Danny Grant as this year’s honoree of the Frank Erwin Award.
This award is presented annually to an alumnus who has provided exceptional support and leadership to the Chapter.
“On behalf of the Tau Chapter, I want to express our gratitude to Danny Grant for his continual support,” said outgoing Tau Chapter Grand Master Jared Jong '18. "It was an honor to present this award to such a dedicated and deserving Kappa Sig alum. I would especially like to thank him for his generous contributions to Rush, helping us gain 60-plus quality pledges."

Danny currently serves as TKSEF President and on the Trustee Executive Committee. He also served as Campaign Chairman of Tau Legacy 2015, the Capital Campaign to fund the building of Warren Residence Hall. In recognition of his substantial contributions to the capital campaign, the Kappa Sigma Lodge bar is named in his honor.
"I'm always happy to help strengthen and support the Chapter that has brought me close friendships and happy memories for more than 40 years," said Danny. "Times have changed, but the strong bonds created through Kappa Sigma are for life."
Danny is President and Chief Operating Officer of H.D. Grant Co., Inc., founded by his father in 1956. The company represents the best manufacturing lines in the HVAC industry.
He graduated from UT Austin with a Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering degree in 1983.
He and his wife, Suzanne, live in Houston, have been married 38 years, and have two sons and a daughter. Daniel (married to Emily) and Tau '13 son Harrison (engaged to Jenn Francis) work at H.D. Grant Co. Daughter Jordon (married to Robert Rutherford) teaches at St. Jerome Catholic School in Houston. They welcomed their first grandchild, Eloise, in December 2020.

Frank Erwin, Chairman of the University of Texas System Board of Regents from 1966 to 1971, was a devoted Kappa Sig who served as an alumnus advisor and a founding trustee of the Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation. He was honored as Tau Man of the Year in 1965 and again in 1980.
