SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

GOOD SAM FAMILIES FOR THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS

We have three families for Thanksgiving and Christmas from Good Sam and are collecting canned goods and other non-perishables for our families. Items can be brought and left in the container in the side entrance  Items will be collected through Sunday, November 20th for their Thanksgiving; however, we will still be collecting food items through December 18th for their Christmas. So please keep this in mind when you are shopping in the near future. Known information on three families is posted on the Mission bulletin board in the side entry. Due to HIPAA laws the personal information is restricted. Thanks.

MITTEN TREE RETURNS

We will be sponsoring the Mitten Tree again this year for our annual contribution to Good Samaritan. It will be placed in the side entry beginning on Sunday, November 27th for convenience and so everyone can enjoy seeing the new items being added week by week. The deadline for giving will be Sunday, December 18th. That's not a lot of time, but we know that you will be generous. Everyone is welcome to bring your items and place on the tree. We are looking for scarves, hats, socks, and, of course, gloves and MITTENS.

CURRENT SERMON SERIES

Jesus again is heading to Cana. The last time that Jesus was in Cana, he was invited to a wedding and changed the water into the best wine. This time when Jesus arrives to Cana, he is met by an official whose son was ill. As we continue this telling of the Jesus narrative from the Gospel of John, my hope is that we will see the Messiah, be enthralled by the Miracles, and hear the invitation of the Mission that Jesus is calling each of us into.

Yours in Christ,

Brandon

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

It looks like these lovely ladies are having fun with food.

What are they doing?

GREEN SPACE

Biologists from New Zealand have identified the first known example of a plant species that seems to exhibit eusociality, a behavior in which different members of a colony play separate roles that together perpetuate the group's survival. Until now, scientists had recognized eusociality only in animals such as colonial bees, ants, and naked mole-rats. "Plants were completely off the radar," says Kevin Burns, a Victoria University of Wellington biologist who led a study of the staghorn fern on Lord Howe Island off Australia.

Examining these epiphytic ferns growing at different heights in dozens of colonies, the researchers found non-reproducing brown nest fronds that anchor the plants on trees as well as antler-shaped green fronds that grow spores for the next generation. Some 40% of the fronds on each plant were not contributing to new growth. Such reproductive division of labor is a classic criterion for eusociality. Burns says this division of tasks sets staghorn ferns apart from other colonial plants.    (GSN #124)

All the Women of the Bible

By M. del Mastro

(220.8/MAS)

All the Women of the Bible is a treasure trove of information. Saints, sinners, harlots and angels, not a one is missing from this wonderful collection of biographies and stories of over 400 biblical women. If you've ever asked yourself the question, "Who was she?";  you need only to open this amazing book to find out!

They're all here, all real women, and all willing to pay whatever price asked to gain their heart's desire. Their struggles, successes and failures still resonate within us today. All the Women of the Bible is divided into two sections: "The Book of Names," and "The Book of Stories." "The Book of Names," opens the book and contains over 400 entries. It is a well-researched and easy-to-follow biographical dictionary and thesaurus of sorts, listing each woman along with a short description of her life and citations where her story can be found and cross references to other dictionary entries.

"The Book of Stories," makes up the second half of the book and takes quite a different tone than that of the dictionary. Here, retold in rich detail, are the stories of fifty-six very important women; women whose lives were changed by crisis and challenge; women who learned, shared, or shunned faith in the Lord.
