150th Anniversary of the Great Boston Fire

On the evening of 9 November 1872, the Great Boston Fire began in a warehouse on Summer Street. The fire was finally extinguished 12 hours later, with a loss of 776 buildings.

Learn more about the Great Boston Fire at two author events this week at the MHS. The Great Boston Fire: The Inferno That Nearly Incinerated the City, with Stephanie Schorow, on Thursday, 10 November, at 6:00 PM, and Inferno: The Great Boston Fire of 1872, with Anthony M. Sammarco, on Saturday, 12 November, at 2:00 PM.

To complement the talks, we will display items from our collection related to the fire including illustrations, accounts, and before and after views of The Great Boston Fire. Visit the MHS on Thursday, Saturday, or Monday to see these items.
