Packing Squash Salsa Bowls for

Wild Plum

14 volunteers served to fill 56 tote bags with the ingredients to prepare squash salsa bowls for Wild Plum families.

56 cans of black beans, 56 green peppers, 56 red onions, 56 acorn squash were some of the items that were divided and packed.

If you were not able to help this time, the next Chef Hearty activity will be in October. Check The Pulse and the church service slide shows for the specific date and details.

Flower Vases Needed

Each Sunday, altar flowers are transferred to a container & given to the donor. Our supply of coffee cans or other suitable containers is very low. If you have coffee cans, large mouth quart jars, medium size vases, please donate them for our use. Contact Ann Yoder (303 772-8294) if you have questions.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Join me in celebrating our diversity, especially by focusing on this month as Hispanic Heritage month. Here is a prayer to consider offering daily to celebrate the voices and contributions of our LatinX community.

What is Hispanic Heritage Month? Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) takes place September 15 to October 15 every year as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino community.

Creator God,

We thank You for our wondrous diversity, for our cultures,

traditions and languages, for all the ways we celebrate our

humanity and praise Your divinity. We value all peoples,

and in this time, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

May we remember in our churches the leaders, teachers,

and theologians that have been part of our Christian faith tradition.

May we continue to hear from diverse voices that speak the truth

of God's love, peace and justice for all peoples. Guide is in ways of

new understandings to build a more inclusive church. In the name

of Christ Jesus, our Savior, Redeemer and Friend, we pray. Amen.

Lights Shine for the Handbell Choir!

Ringing for you brings us joy. When we can actually see the music we are ringing for you, it brings us joy.

The bell choir has been using 6 sets of music stand lights that belong to the church as well as using music stand lights that belong to Linda. A couple of the lights are failing and darkness has begun to descend upon several bell choir members while attempting to see their music. What to do? Much laughter greeted the suggestion to memorize all our music! Fortunately through the kindness and generosity of Nancy Hand (one of our premiere ringers!) funds were granted to be used from the bell choir memorial fund to purchase 2 new music stand lights. The lights have three brightness settings and are very sturdy - they will be much appreciated and should last for many years.

On behalf of all bell choir members, we thank you Nancy!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Relationship abuse is a pattern of abusive tactics used by one person in a relationship to obtain and maintain power and control over the other person. Relationship violence is not an isolated instance of aggression. It is an atmosphere that is created by many forms of abuse and a cycle that increases over time in frequency and intensity.

Domestic Violence is a Crime!

The Heart’s United Women in Faith (UWF) has long supported Safe Shelter of St Vrain Valley. Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley provides a comprehensive system of programs and services to address the needs of victims of domestic abuse. All their services are confidential and free of charge. Services include, but are not limited to:

  • 24-hour crisis line
  • Emergency shelter
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Case management (including transitional housing programs)
  • Information and referrals
  • Legal advocacy
  • Community and peer education

All services are available in both English and Spanish.

During October UWF invites you to bring in donations to help the women and children supported by the Safe Shelter. A box is provided in the Gallery for your donations.

Monetary donations can be made to Heart of Longmont and earmarked SAFE SHELTER.

Gun Safe Events

In partnership with the United Church of Christ (UCC), Heart of Longmont will participate in two upcoming safe gun events.

The first one on October 29 is a gun buy back and community celebration. Gun owners can safely dispose of guns and receive gift cards in exchange. Volunteers are needed from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM to receive guns that owners will turn in.

The guns will be repurposed into garden tools by RAW tools. Live demonstrations will give people the opportunity to see this process.

The event takes place in the UCC parking lot; 1500 9th Avenue from 10 AM to 12PM.

The second event takes place on Friday, November 11th. Following the Veteran’s Day parade from 11:30 to 1:30 is the gun safe giveaway. The giveaway will take place in Roosevelt Park between the Senior Center and the Recreation Center. A free handgun safe will be given away to individuals who come to the event.

Sign up to volunteer here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E48AFA62BA0F5C70-gunsafe

Gun safes do save lives.

“US veterans die by suicide at a higher rate than that of the civilian population and are more likely to use a firearm as their method. Increasing the time and distance between someone in a suicidal crisis and access to lethal means can reduce suicide risk and save lives.” Cited from the Roadmap to Empower Veterans and End the National Tragedy of Suicide and the Veterans Administration.

Cookies and Chips

We are collecting cookies and individual bags of chips for the gun buy back event on Saturday, October 29th, in the United Church of Christ parking lot.

Lunch will be provided for volunteers working the event and the Heart of Longmont will supply the chips for the lunch.

From 1 to 3 everyone is invited to the celebration taking place after the event. Watch the director of RAW Tools and his father turn guns into garden tools while munching on cookies and listening to music.

Look for the labeled container in the gallery to place chips in.

Sign up to supply cookies on the sheet in the gallery.

Thank you for making our community safer!

Justice, Healing and the Legacy of

Native American Boarding Schools

Thursday, October 6th

3PM-5PM Eastern / Noon-2PM Pacific

Register here.

The Native American International Caucus of the UMC invites all United Methodists to observe a special week of prayer and action from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6 focused on the theme of Justice for Our Children - Healing for Our Communities.

Join United Women in Faith members and friends on October 6th for a virtual time of gathering and learning together.

We will:

  • Pray together
  • Watch Unspoken: America's Native American Boarding Schools, an educational program recommended by NAIC
  • Reflect in small groups on the history of Native American Boarding Schools in the United States, and
  • Consider how this history echoes into the present moment, as Native American students continue to face racial discrimination, criminalization and school pushout, and as survivors of boarding schools continue to call for justice and healing.

This event is hosted by United Women in Faith. There is no cost to participate. All are welcome. Space is limited and registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Register here.

Financial Update

Overall church finances continue to be slightly better than the 2022 budget, with income at nearly 70% of the annual budget and expenses at 63% of the annual budget (67% of the year is complete). However, it should be noted that the 2022 approved budget was a loss of $70,885. It is expected that our income will exceed the budget and expenses will be lower so our loss for the year will be less.

As mentioned last month, YTD income and net income (deficit) comparisons to 2021 will be impacted for the balance of the year as HOL was the beneficiary in June 2021 of the forgiveness of the PPP loan of $37,900. No such benefit is forthcoming in 2022.

Without the PPP loan forgiveness, income for the year is up $ 22,208 (10%) thanks primarily to a couple large contributions in January and a large contribution in August.

Expenses are up $7,616 (3.0%) from 2021. The largest variance to budget continues to be for our facility operations where our building maintenance expenses are at 77% of the annual budget.

Our Satellite Location has been set up in the nursery and we are excited to begin welcoming families in need into the space to get things that they need. We are looking for volunteers to become trained to assist families while picking out what they need. Please contact Tricia Grafelman at tricia@heartoflongmont.org if you would like to help or have any questions.

Library Book Give Away

Now is the time to add to your book collection. The library is downsizing and we are in the process of clearing and consolidating book shelves. This is a process and the first section of the library we are working on contains books on faith, personal devotions, history and personal growth. Those are the books currently being given away. Downsizing will happen over a period of time.

There are several crates of books in the Gallery against the west wall next to the library table. Please take some time to see if there are books there you or someone you know might like. Additional books will be added to the give away as space allows.

Please do not take the crates.

October's compassion offering supports Chef Hearty.

Chef Hearty began in the fall of 2021 as a pilot program to bring healthy meal kits to our Wild Plum Headstart families. Chef Hearty bags contain a recipe and all the healthy ingredients needed to prepare it as well as encouragement for the children and their parents and families to cook together. It has been a huge success and the families look forward every month to their next bag.

If you would like to be a part of this important and fun ministry please contact either Rod Edmonds or Tricia Grafelman.

If you wish to donate to this month's compassion offering, you can do so online by clicking here and navigating to the Monthly Compassion Offering tile. Or, you may send a check to the church office with "Compassion Offering" on the memo line.

Our Mission:

Putting More of God's Love Into The World

Helping all persons find deeper meaning and God’s purpose for their lives as committed Christ-followers.

Serving as the Heart of Longmont means:

We will welcome all persons, without reservation or judgment,

just as Jesus Christ would do.

We will work tirelessly by entering into intentional acts of compassion and social justice to make our community a place where God’s love is known by all, where poverty and deprivation are unknown by any, and where respect for the worth and dignity of each person is the norm.

We will respect and honor other religious traditions

while choosing Christ as our way of knowing God best.

We will emphasize life-long learning so that we may

engage our world from a dynamic and creative perspective.

We will work to protect God’s creation.

We will practice stewardship of all aspects of our lives,

including time, talent, financial resources, and spiritual gifts.
