Message from Mayor Patrick Fitzsimmons
We are all tired of wearing masks. The current mask mandate for Buncombe Co. was to expire today and we had hoped it would be history. However, due to a continued plateau of positive tests rates above the 5% metric and the appearance of a new variant, it is wise to continue wearing masks in public places. I agreed with the County to extend the practice for Weaverville after consulting with all Town Council members.

A news release from the County states:

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners has extended the county-wide face covering requirement for all indoor public spaces through Jan. 5, 2022 at noon. The indoor mask requirement also extends to Asheville, Biltmore Forest, Black Mountain, Montreat, Weaverville, and Woodfin.

In Buncombe County, COVID-19 case rates continue to be high, and per the CDC definition, the County remains an area of high transmission. The percent positivity remains in the moderate category, and the death rate remains in the substantial category.

“Unfortunately, COVID-19 cases continue to increase after a high level plateau. The percent positivity is now consistently above 5% again, and we are likely to see a further increase after the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Public Health Director Stacie Saunders. “Transitioning to living with COVID-19 means doing what we can now to reduce transmission and burden of new infections. Our goal is to dampen as much as possible any surge we may see during this holiday season with the hope of achieving decreasing case rate and spread as we enter the new year.”

Free COVID-19 vaccines are available to anyone 5 and older at Buncombe County Health and Human Services by appointment or walk-in between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at 40 Coxe Ave., Asheville. No ID is required. Learn more at www.buncombeready.org.

To answer questions about the local COVID-19 metrics, Buncombe County Health and Human Services will host a virtual media Q&A on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. for credentialed media outlets. Buncombe County Public Health Director Stacie Saunders and Board Chair Brownie Newman will be available to answer questions related to the COVID-19 response in Buncombe County. To participate in this Media Q&A, please reply to hhspio@buncombecounty.org. Zoom details will be sent out by 1:45 p.m.

Buy A Brick to Commemorate our New Community Center
Help commemorate the opening of the Weaverville Community Center at Dottie Sherrill Knoll! This natural wood and rock building totals just over 7,000 SF and contains a large community meeting room and a smaller multi-purpose room, as well as a covered terrace and large kitchen, all of which is fully accessible. The building also houses the local Dry Ridge Historical Museum, which includes collections of artifacts from Weaverville’s long and rich historical past.

Many residents and visitors have expressed an interest in being a part of the completion of this new facility. The Town has selected a “buy-a-brick” fundraising campaign to allow interested parties to participate in the project. A brick may be ordered using an online order form, with payment by check or PayPal, with the brick engraved to honor or memorialize someone special, at a cost of $100 per brick. These bricks will be installed in a special area of the walkway at the building, where it can be viewed by all who visit. The first order of 162 engraved bricks will be placed when enough orders are received. Funds from these bricks will be used for landscaping of the grounds around the building, sidewalks, and parking areas, as well as walkways to Lake Louise and to a future recreational area.

Get a Garbage Toter Before the Price Goes Up
The Town has a 64-gallon garbage can for sale to its residents, and these carts accommodate the lifting device on the back of our garbage trucks. Our staff in the Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department appreciate these carts, as heavy loads of garbage are easily lifted into the back of the garbage truck without causing injury to the workers. A green “Toter” with “Town of Weaverville” printed on its side has been for sale for the past several years, and around 12-15 are sold each month for $45 each. These carts are less expensive and more durable than those for sale at big box stores, and have the added benefit of a lifetime warranty from the town. If the lid breaks, or a wheel or axle fails, or the lifting bar is damaged, the town will repair or replace the cart at no cost to the owner.

Unfortunately, inflation has found its way to the garbage cart industry, and we have been notified that 2022 prices will increase for the Toters. Therefore, the Town will honor the
current $45 price through the month of December but as of January 1, 2022, the price will increase to $55. December is the time to get your Toter, or one for someone on your Christmas list, before the 2022 price increase!

Dear Friends of WCCHL:

It is hard to believe that December is on our doorstep and that we are now into our third month of programming at the Community Center (CC). Here are a few highlights to put on your calendars for the month of December and a few things to consider for the first quarter of 2022.
Mon, December 6th / 10:00 AM / Newcomers’ Group / Meeting Rm / CC
Martha Little (Group Champion) has brought together this new group in an effort to identify a team of townsfolk who will eventually help welcome and engage new Town residents. Besides a way to meet new people, you’ll learn what is happening around town. BYO coffee and nosh while you enjoy an hour of high energy. Tom Balestrieri will be the guest speaker to discuss the Center for Creative & Healthy Living mission and future activities.

Tue, Dec 7th / 4:00-7:00 PM / WCCHL Drop In-Open House Mtg / Meeting Room / CC
To hear your feedback before our WCCHL quarterly Board of Directors meeting, the Board will host a Drop In-Open House style meeting at the CC to hear your thoughts about programming for 4th Quarter 2021. We also want to hear what you would like to see continued, added, or modified to 1st Quarter 2022’s schedule. This is an opportunity to speak with members of our Board and to meet some of the current volunteer instructors and group champions. More so, it will be a great opportunity to have your voices heard. We look forward to seeing you there. If you are unable to attend this drop-in event, please pass along your thoughts to wcchl@weavervillenc.org.
