We extend our gratitude to Elyse Belak '22 and Julia Kashuba '22 on educating us on how to refer to Ukraine. Please take a moment to read:
Julia noted: "As a Ukrainian, I'd like to explain why calling it so is offensive, especially during this time. Placing "the" before Ukraine signifies that it is a part of Russia, and dates back to the Soviet Union. Ukraine is not a part of Russia. It is an independent country, has spent all of history fighting for its independence, and is still fighting today. It is just "Ukraine." This may seem minor, but during today's genocide of Ukrainian people, this clarification means everything. It is the difference between education and ignorance. I know this was probably not intentional, and I know you can not edit this mass email, but I kindly ask that you never say "the Ukraine" in the future. It is incorrect and perpetuates the oppression of Ukraine and its people. Thank you so much for understanding!"
Elyse explained, "When referencing the independent country of Ukraine, there should never be “the” in front of it. As a Ukrainian, it is one of the most offensive things that people in the U.S. say when speaking about our country. To explain the background of this offense, it dates back to the Soviet Union and has the insinuation that Russia owns Ukraine. In this day and age, it is still said and written, and with the current mass killings in our country it has an even stronger connotation. It is simply “Ukraine” with no “the” in front of it."
