SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

PARABLES & STORIES

After Joseph has passed away, after all the years of harvesting and storage are long forgotten, a new Pharaoh comes to power. But this Pharaoh has forgotten all that was done through the providence of God within the dysfunctional family. The fear of the other begins to grow. The fear of the outsider begins to take hold. The fear of not having enough sets in. And Pharaoh makes his choice. But the women will not blindly follow Pharaoh’s command for they fear God. Emboldened by God’s love and God’s providence, the women begin a resistance. So the baby that should have been killed in the river is saved through the water. Everything changes when Pharaoh’s daughter sees the baby in the basket by the reeds. So join us this week as we see the way God continues to call us into justice work in the face of oppression.

Yours in Christ

Brandon

GREEN SPACE NEWS

A decade ago there were no lions or rhinos in Rwanda's Akagera National Park, largely because of rampant poaching following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Now, however, collaboration between the Rwandan government and the nonprofit African Parks has revitalized 277,000 acres of wetlands and savanna along the border between Rwanda and Tanzania.

Today Akagera is a growing tourist attraction with some 60 lions, several dozen rhinos, more than 130 elephants, and about 80 giraffes. It has hundreds of bird species including the rare showbill stork. "The revival of Akagera is nothing short of astounding," says the park manager Ladis Ndahiriwe. "Akagera has become a critical contributor to the local and national economy." The Triumph of Christianity: How a Forbidden Religion Swept the World

By Bart D. Ehrman

(270.1/EHR)

How did a religion whose first believers were twenty or so illiterate day laborers in a remote part of the empire became the official religion of Rome, converting some thirty million people in just four centuries? In The Triumph of Christianity, early Christian historian Bart D. Ehrman weaves the rigorously-researched answer to this question “into a vivid, nuanced, and enormously readable narrative” (Elaine Pagels, National Book Award-winning author of The Gnostic Gospels), showing how a handful of charismatic characters used a brilliant social strategy and an irresistible message to win over hearts and minds one at a time.

This “humane, thoughtful and intelligent” book (The New York Times Book Review) upends the way we think about the single most important cultural transformation our world has ever seen—one that revolutionized art, music, literature, philosophy, ethics, economics, and law.
