Adopt A Pet Today from the Lassen

County Animal Shelter – Nova

Nova is an ‘out of this world’ dog and she’s looking for her forever family!

Nova is perfectly compact and would make a fabulous hiking or camping companion. She’s the type of dog that will accompany you on adventures with a smile on her face and happy tail wags the whole time. She’s barely a year and a half old, spayed, and current on her vaccinations. Further evaluation is needed to determine how Nova does with other dogs, though her previous owner stated that her new home should be cat free.

This girl has spunk and lots of positive playful energy. She enjoys flipping stuffed toys into the air and fetching for her person. She’s quick, agile, and so much fun to hang out with.

Children in Nova’s new home should be 12+. She’s house and crate trained and even knows a handful of basic commands. If interested in learning more about Nova, or other adoptable animals at the shelter, please call staff at (530) 257-9200.

Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Current shelter hours during the COVID-19 pandemic are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 257-9200.

2022 Lassen 4-H Hall of Fame: George West

All week long on SusanvilleStuff, in celebration of National 4-H Week, we will be featuring this year’s six inductees into the Lassen County 4-H Hall of Fame.

by Lily Ammon and Maddi Johnson

Lassen 4-H Ambassadors

October 2nd through October 8th of 2022 is National 4-H Week! The theme this year is Opportunity for All. What better theme to focus on as we bring to you the second year of the Lassen County 4-H Hall of Fame.

4Hhalloffame image

This year’s Hall of Fame selection and interview process is brought to you by the Lassen County 4-H Ambassadors, Lily Ammon, and Maddi Johnson. Nominations were open to the public during the month of September and several nominations carried over from the project’s inaugural run last year.

Opportunity is defined as the chance for success. 4-H Leaders are a prime example of opportunity. They volunteer countless hours of their time to ensure that local youth have the chance to learn and succeed wherever they choose. Most of this work often goes without thanks and many of the hours they spend goes unknown.

Our first inductee of the 2022 Class of the Hall of Fame gives more definition to the word opportunity than the Webster Dictionary. Welcome, Mr. George West.

George was the Community Leader of the Lake 4-H Club for many years. He led the welding, wood working, beef, canning and cooking, food preservation, community service and swine projects (just to name a few).

When asked about her dad, Jennifer West, said that her dad always had two projects that he loved and considered “hard” for him. He took great pride in making sure that the Janesville Cemetery displayed flags for its Veterans and that there were flowers planted at the entrance. George was a strong believer in the Lake 4-H Pancake Breakfast! He liked that the kids in his 4-H Club were involved in the community and enjoyed that the breakfast brought people together to talk. George always paired an elderly person with a member and had the strong rule that “nobody ate alone.”

The Lassen County Fair was George’s favorite event of the whole year. He was nominated anonymously for the Hall of Fame by three individuals who shared this special moment with us: “He has us get together and go look at exhibits as a club. We celebrated our entries together and others too. He took pictures of us and printed them all – even the blurry or closed eye ones. He was proud of our hard work and taught us to be proud too!”

George believed that the most valuable thing 4-H had to offer was teaching kids that you should give back to the community more than what you get. He believed that it built confidence in our youth. He believed in letting kids make mistakes in a safe place. Let them learn by doing!

George is still often talked about in the 4-H Community and is missed by all that knew him.

It’s an honor, Mr. West, to induct you as the first member into the Lassen County 4-H Hall of Fame Class of 2022.

County Animal Shelter Makes

Announcement Regarding Pet Euthanization

On Friday, September 30th, Lassen County Animal Shelter Kennel Technician Jaime Proia made the following plea to the community:

“In an effort to be completely transparent, the staff at the Lassen County Animal Shelter would like to make an announcement and inform the community of a recent decision that was not made lightly.

“Due to the high volume of animals waiting to be surrendered and the constant flow of unwanted pets being dumped after hours, combined with rescue and shelter partners also being full to capacity and unable to pull regularly from our facility, staff has been burdened with the heavy, and emotionally taxing, task of euthanizing for space. This is a practice that has not been in use for years.

animalsheltercapacity image

“Should you find yourself in a position that requires you to rehome a family pet, please attempt to find a new suitable home for your furry family member on your own first. There are currently over 50 dogs and 70 cats waiting to be surrendered to the shelter. Additionally, dumping these pets in the kennels after hours puts a major strain on the shelter and its staff, forcing their hands to euthanize for space in order to fit the new arrivals into the shelter, while also pushing people waiting on the list further back.

“Furthermore, if the pet you surrendered cannot find a new home or a rescue to pull him from our facility in a reasonable amount of time, he will be euthanized in order to make room for the next animal in need; we can no longer house animals indefinitely while they wait for the perfect family to adopt them. This is not a localized issue but a worldwide one.

“Surrender rates have skyrocketed and adoption rates have dropped. It has been a difficult journey for shelter/rescue staff everywhere to navigate and experience.

Here are a few options that the shelter staff recommends that you use before surrendering your animal to the shelter:

  • Advertise your pet on 93.3 JDX’s Swap Shop, a local radio program that runs Monday – Saturday, 8AM to 9AM (530) 257-8255 / (530) 257-8256.
  • Utilize social media to get your pet’s photos and bio out for many people to see. There are quite a few local FB groups that would be perfect to advertise your pet on.
  • The Lassen Humane Society offers rehoming assistance. Simply email a picture/bio of your pet, along with your contact information, to lassenhumanesociety@yahoo.com. They will do a courtesy posting of your pet on Petfinder.com.

Staff is available to answer questions/concerns during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 9AM to 3PM. (530) 257-9200. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Leslie’s Jewelry Store and Watchshop, 1941 ~ From the Eastman Archives at UC Davis

Men Close Store To Join Service

October 3, 1942

Closing of the Jensen Brothers Hardware Store at 727 Main Street for the duration of the war was announced this week by Abe and Jud Jensen, the proprietors. Both are to leave soon for the armed forces, according to the announcement.

Another Susanville Main Street store changed hands this week. Leslie’s Jewelry Store, formerly operated by Leslie Mastolier, is now under the management of Walter Jefferies. Mastolier has volunteered for service in the army air force reserve and is now in training. Jefferies comes here from Seattle, Wash.

Under an agreement, the former owner will return to Susanville at the end of the war and will reenter the firm. Mrs. Mastolier will continue to be associated with the business for the duration.
