Happy Thanksgiving!

I am grateful to have joined the Monterey Peninsula community and to meet so many wonderful people. It truly has been a warm welcome, and the people are what make our community special.

Last week, I attended the Central Coast National Philanthropy Day, where our own Monterey Public Library Friends & Foundation members were Distinguished Honorees. The Friends & Foundation work to support the Library - volunteering their own time to make a difference in the community. As I sat through the ceremony last week, I saw wonderful people from different agencies along the peninsula that work together, support and lift each others up, and are just making things happen to build a stronger community. MPL’s honorees, Doug Holtzman and Diane de Lorimier, embrace our community and volunteer their time for the sake of our library community; for that we are all so thankful.

Cheers to you and your family- Brian

GIVING TUESDAY
Children and adults reading in the library
For “Giving Tuesday,” I am humbly asking you help us make it happen - help MPL’s Friends and Foundation create My Place to Learn: a redesign of the library’s children’s area through the annual MCGives campaign. This renovated community hub will be center stage for so many young readers and their families. The tradition of bringing young kids to the library for story time and play is invaluable to their development. We want to improve the space to create more interactive and tactile spaces, rather than transactional experiences.

Now through December 31st, your donations will provide a much needed facelift to include an open, aesthetically happy and safe learning and play zone, surrounded with brightly colored age appropriate kids furniture and decor for Monterey families and visitors to enjoy. It will be a place for caregivers to read to children, for grandparents to take their grandchildren on a special outing, and for young children to reminiscence of special times and meaningful books.

Donated funds to My Place to Learn through Monterey County Gives! will have an additional matched percentage back to MPL at the end of the campaign, making your generous dollars go even further. For Giving Tuesday, I hope you will strongly consider donating to support the My Place To Learn MCGives campaign.

Together we do, we can and we will make things happen!

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE TERRACE?
If you visited the terrace recently, you may have noticed some maintenance and barriers on the exterior wall. Muralist Natalia Corazza and Raven have begun work on the Young Readers Mural, funded as a memorial to Barbara Sovereign.

The design illustrates the benefits and magic of reading, as a foundation of learning through sharing knowledge and stories that inspire and enable understanding. References include Aladdin, The Jungle Book, the Magic Tree House series, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Treasure Island, Two Years Before the Mast and Between Pacific Tides. Each scene in the series also highlights related themes, such as solidarity, adversity, companionship, adventure and exploration.

We are thankful for the addition of new art in the library that will inspire our community members! Work will continue in the coming weeks - stay tuned for more information.
