Hi everyone,
It sure was weird being at home on Tuesday night, wasn't it? This was to be a long, generous term, with plenty of time to accomplish all of our preparations. So now we've lost a rehearsal, but we do have time to get everything done, without panic, with one major proviso: you all have to get to every rehearsal from here on out! Empty chairs mean extra rehearsal time, so stay healthy and don't take that trip to the Bahamas until after the concert, OK?
I really hope you took the necessary time to listen to our playlist on Tuesday, or during some other unexpectedly free chunk of time. Listening and watching is especially important in the case of Alzheimer's Stories because much of it is so unexpected in nature. Next Tuesday, we'll be running both the first and second movements to see where we stand. I'd really like to be able to let that work simmer, in order to devote our attention to our shorter works. Before Tuesday, though, you have a highly important assignment: some changes need to be made in your scores!
We could say that Robert Cohen created a monster by citing (and repeating and repeating) statistics which have changed significantly since he wrote the piece in 2009. He has sent a new copy of the piece, designed primarily to make life easier for the accompanist but also updating the text to reflect the increase in the worldwide number of documented Alzheimer's diagnoses by the year 2020. [The monster factor? He'll have to do it all again in, say, 10 years, and thereafter forever!]
Using the updated score, I have studied the first movement to identify the text changes. I've listed them below, naming the measures and the voice parts affected.
PLEASE make the changes in your score. You can see that we don't want to waste time listing them at the rehearsal, especially since we lost a rehearsal. So here goes:
- p.8 m.57 SATB all 8th notes "thou-sand twen-ty"
- p.10 m.65 SA 8th notes "Two thou-sand twen-ty"
- p.11 m.69. SATB. quarter triplets "Fi-fty-one mil-lion world'
- p.16 m.102 TB same time values "From one to fi-fty-one
- p.17 m.105. ST replace quarter-note "nine" with 8th-notes "twen-ty"
- p.28 m.187 S replace "nine the" with "twen-ty" (trust me!)
- p.29 m.191 T replace "nine the" with "twen-ty" (trust me!)
I studied the whole work and found nothing else that would affect you. Before next Tuesday I'll study the first movement again, comparing what's on my computer with my own score, to make sure I haven't missed anything. If I have, I'll tell you on Tuesday. If you are also looking, be aware that not everything makes sense!
Have fun! It'll be great to be back together again, and if you each were to make time to listen to the work again, singing along, we'd all benefit—especially me!
Now go out to the lawn and pick up the hat that's all that remains of the snowman.
See you next Tuesday,
Solveig
