National Day for Truth and Reconciliation |
SaskCulture recognizes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 as an opportunity to learn more about the true impact of Residential schools on First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit peoples living on this land, understand change needed, and make a commitment to action. Visit the Indigenous Awareness Hub on the SaskCulture website to learn more.
The SaskCulture offices will be closed on September 29 so that staff can have the day to honour, learn and grow.

Culture Days events recognize NDTR in Saskatchewan | |
Over 20 Culture Days Hubs in Saskatchewan are holding events that recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR) this year.
People can use the Culture Days event calendar's "Truth and Reconciliation" tag to check out the communities in the province recognizing and commemorating NDTR during Culture Days.
The SaskCulture Culture Days Hub Sponsorship prioritizes Truth and Reconciliation events and activities. Culture Days Saskatchewan encourages everyone to listen, learn, reflect, support, and act on Reconciliation.

Museums have essential role in truth-telling, representation, self-determination | The Museums Association of Saskatchewan (MAS) acknowledges the role that museums played in the creation and perpetuation of colonial ideologies in Canada, says a recent statement by MAS for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The statement affirms MAS' commitment to moving forward in partnership with all Indigenous Nations in the spirit of Reconciliation and collaboration. MAS will continue to support its members to address issues through education, resources, individualized support, and open communication. The Association will be spending September 30 focusing on learning, and encourages others to spend this day reflecting and engaging in acts of Reconciliation. Read more | Reconciliation in action: Saskatoon Open Door Society's Treaty Learning Journey | Staff from the Saskatoon Open Door Society (SODS) left the training program "Treaty Learning Journey: Let’s Talk Truth" wanting to make positive changes in their communities. A recent article by the Office of the Treaty Commissioner (OTC) recounts the OTC's experience facilitating these training sessions for SODS, and the impact of the learning. Participants felt that they learnt more about Indigenous communities, and that the training dispelled myths they had been taught. Other organizations looking to further their knowledge on Treaty and Indigenous issues can contact the OTC to organize training sessions. Read more | Grassroots movement by Indigenous students celebrates 40 years at USask | This month, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Department of Indigenous Studies held a 40th-anniversary celebration to recognize its alumni, students, staff, faculty and accomplishments. The event brought together the early student activists that demanded the creation of a space that reflected their accurate Indigenous perspectives. By highlighting how Indigenous students organized to push for the creation of the department, and the impact it had on academic structures, the event aimed to empower current students. | September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. This day is a time to listen, learn, act on and honour the impact of Residential schools, and consider ways to address the 94 Calls to Action outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Final Report. Here are but a few of the many resources and events to commemorate NDTR this year. | |
