Stick It! Bob's Favorite Tapes

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

Painters use sticky tape for a variety of reasons. Here are just a few:

•Taping down their watercolor paper on a surface before painting

•Temporarily taping painting to a studio wall

•Masking off a portion of the painting surface - like a frisket

Lately I have taped off a four-sided border on watercolor paper to create a "mock mat" border. I paint inside the lines, so to speak - then finally… slowly peel back the tape, revealing a pretty cool, instantaneous presentation of my most immediate, current piece with a pristine white border. If you peel the tape off too fast, you may not get a clean, crisp edge and tear the top layer of the paper surface.

The type of tape is FrogTape - yellow for sensitive surfaces. I use this "masking the borders" technique for graphic impact. In the video, I demo with black acrylic paint. You can certainly use acrylics in an array of colors, watercolors or oils on any surface and mask off the borders.

I have always liked the look of clean, sharp border edges. Using this technique of taping gives the appearance of a Monotype print - without using a printing press!

My second favorite tape I consistently use in the studio is a brown paper type. Its industrial strength adhesive is strong enough to temporarily adhere a paper painting to the wall while it dries. I tape my paintings to the wall so I can live with them for awhile - and also to critique. This brown tape sticks everything to the wall and easily peels off. Other tapes may not be strong enough.

Incidentally, I also use this tape to keep my paper flat and and in one place so it doesn’t move around. I paint on the entire paper surface so I don’t use the tape on top.

I tape the back side of the watercolor paper by taking a three inch strip of tape and roll it into a tube, sticky side out. (You basically just made double-back tape.)
