September Students of the Month

KAVI RASTOGI

CLASS OF 2024

The last four years at North Hunterdon have let senior Kavi Rastogi meet a ton of new people, while improving himself as a person and making memories along the way. Kavi’s favorite classes at North have been AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP Computer Science. He has always been interested in mathematics and all three classes have their foundation in math. Kavi’s favorite of the three classes was AP Computer Science, because he loved designing and coding his own projects. This class along with other coding classes at North are part of the reason why he decided to major in Computer Science. At North, Kavi is a member of Math Honor Society, Ski and Snowboard Club, and Computer Science Club. He has participated in the Math League competitions each year and is applying for National Honor Society this fall. Over the past summer, Kavi ran his own landscaping business, which donated a portion of their earnings to a local food pantry, The Outreach Connection. This was a great experience that taught him a lot about leadership and running a business. He also volunteers at the Outreach Connection, volunteers as a tutor, and enjoys spending time weightlifting outside of school. One of Kavi’s favorite experiences at North was the Ski Club trips. He loved spending time with friends both on the mountain and during the bus rides to and from Blue Mountain. Next year in college, Kavi will major in Computer Science and possibly minor in something business related. He is applying to a long list of schools, but his top choices are Duke, Stanford, Yale, and UCLA.

SELINA ZHANG

CLASS OF 2024

Senior, Selina Zhang has learned a lot from her teachers in her favorite classes at North Hunterdon. Selina greatly enjoyed the labs and structured learning in Mrs. Flynn’s AP Biology. Her formative years of Computer Science, under Mrs. Vida’s fluent and fascinating explanations and hands-on projects. She expanded her computer science knowledge in Ms. Waddell’s Data Structures. Mr. Halldorson’s Calculus BC and Mr. Schuetz’s Statistics furnish her math knowledge, and Mr. Quinn’s Physics C furthers Physics. Language Arts with Ms. Carr and Ms. Fedorko have cultivated her analytical thinking and passion for essays. She gained understanding in Latin syntax and classics with Mrs. Mullay. She enjoyed Mr. Franzyshen’s AP Government discussions and modern economics in Mr. McSweeney’s AP Economics. Selina is a proud regular writer and blog co-manager for the Northern Lights Art and Literary Magazine. As a member of Diversity Club, her favorite event was hosting a table and brewing fresh tea at the May Cultural Celebrations Day. The teachers at NHHS have been a big inspiration for her long-standing passion of tutoring part-time in STEM. Selina is a violinist and is currently studying classical violin at Manhattan School of Music Precollege. She would like to stay on the East Coast in her studies of either mathematics or cellular biology. Founding and practicing with the NHHS Science Bowl team is one of her happiest memories. Special shoutout to the legend-league team members and the fantastic coaches, Dr. Ledogar and Dr. Wilhelm for their endless support and enthusiasm!!!! (W moment) I’m honored to be your captain!! Challenging, exciting, fun, and a lot of experimentation (do it!). A special and unforgettable four years!

September Athletes of the Month

SARA BERGSTROM

CLASS OF 2024

Senior, Sara Bergstrom has been competing in gymnastics for the last seven years. Sara started her competitive journey at Gymnastics Unlimited where she still trains. She has been on the North Hunterdon team for the last four years. Sara has always competed on the vault for the Lions, but this year she stepped up her game and learned a new skill of competing on the floor as well. In September, the team was proud to have won against Montgomery during their Senior Night. Outside of gymnastics, Sara is a member of many of North’s National Honor Societies. She is also Vice President of the Art Club. In high school, Sara has had the privilege of being part of a close-knit group of friends who support each other through thick and thin, creating unforgettable memories and forming lifelong bonds. Next year, Sara plans to attend George Washington University where she is thinking of pursuing a degree in Biomedical Sciences.

ELLIE SKLAR

CLASS OF 2024

Senior, Ellie Sklar began playing soccer at three years old and has been playing competitively since elementary school. Some of Ellie’s strengths include her grit, physicality, and game IQ. She plays the position of center back on the school team and center defensive-mid for her club team. Outside of North, Ellie plays for Steel United Soccer Club. So far this year, the Lady Lions competed in the Mountains vs. Seas Tournament, which is a showcase of and a showdown between New Jersey’s two most formidable conferences. The tournament also raises money for a local charity each year. Outside of soccer, Ellie is a member of the Unified Social Club Advisory Committee and Unified Basketball Team, as well as a Peer Leader. She is also involved in Interact Club, National Honor Society, and several subject-specific National Honor Societies. Surfing is a huge passion of Ellie’s. She works as a surf instructor at the Jersey Shore during the summer. She is an instructor at an all-girls surf camp called Pink Pineapple Surf, where she gets to empower the next generation of female surfers to make waves in a male-dominated sport. Ellie says her experience at North has been made memorable by the sponsorship of the supportive community around her. Throughout her four years, she has been grateful to have been able to make strides in the classroom and on the soccer pitch, create lasting friendships, foster meaningful relationships with faculty members, and preparing herself for the next season of life. Ellie is verbally committed to play Division III varsity soccer at Endicott College next year, where she plans to major in Exercise Science on the pre-PT track.

Student Club Sign-Ups

If your student(s) would like to participate in an extracurricular club or activity, we now require a parent/guardian to complete a consent for participation form in Aspen. To give your consent for club membership, please do the following:

  1. Log into your parent Aspen account
  2. Click on Page Directory on the left hand side
  3. Click on North Hunterdon Club Form
  4. Click on and fill out the Consent for Participation Form* (this also serves as your consent for your student to be placed in the Random Drug Testing Pool)
  5. To search for a club in the form, click on the magnifying glass next to Select Club/Activity field. There are multiple pages of clubs so use arrows at the top to advance through the list.

* You will need to complete this consent form multiple times if your child would like to participate in more than one club or activity.

For a list of current clubs and activities at North Hunterdon High School, please visit https://www.nhvweb.net/nhhs/studentactivities/resources/

**Note: Some activities are not listed in the Aspen form as they are event-based, and students need to sign in at the event, such as the Math Competition, or they are by invitation only, such as the Honor Societies.

Announcements regarding upcoming club meetings are made daily during morning announcements. The morning announcements are posted on the NHHS Website – scroll down past important links on the right hand side of homepage.

Having students signed up for clubs in Aspen allows the advisors to contact them to join a Google Classroom or in regards to an upcoming meeting. It also allows the advisor to have contact information for a club member’s parents/guardians (should it be needed) and to see a schedule for a club member (as if they were a student in their class).

If you have any questions, please contact Anthony Petraglia, Director of Student Activities, at apetraglia@nhvweb.net

AP Exam Registration Information

Students enrolled in an AP class are encouraged to take an AP Exam in May 2024 to qualify for college credits. There have been some changes to the AP registration process and timeline from prior years. First, you need to have a College Board Account. For many of you, you already have this to access PSAT, SAT, and AP. If you have ever created an account for one of these, please do not create a second account. If you do, it could prevent all of your SAT scores or AP scores from going to the correct college. You can create an account or verify that you have an account at www.collegeboard.org. Here are some helpful hints for setting up your account or verifying the information if you already have an account:

  • Make sure it is the student’s name that is on the account and NOT a parent’s name.

  • If you forget your login, the College Board will send you an e-mail to reset it, so you have to be able to get the e-mail. This shouldn’t be a parent’s e-mail address. If you already have an account, please check this and change it if necessary. If you have problems with your account, please get in touch with the College Board.

AP Exam Payment and Registration – Each exam is $98, with the exception of AP Research and AP Seminar, which costs $145. Students can begin purchasing their exams today through October 31 using Total Registration. At the end of the process in Total Registration, you will see a confirmation page that will include the information needed to complete the SECOND STEP of enrolling in courses/exams in the College Board's system: https://myap.collegeboard.org/login. This step should be completed right away, as exams will only be ordered if both steps are completed. Tests will not be ordered for students who do not complete both the payment in Total Registration and mark their exam as “YES” on the test registration page in their College Board Account. Late and Cancellation Fees – AP Exams ordered between November 1 and November 14 will pay a $20 late fee per exam in addition to the cost of the exam. For those ordering after November 14, there is a $40 late fee per exam in addition to the regular exam fee until March 6, 2024, when AP exam registration is closed. There is a $40 cancellation fee for any test that is canceled between Nov 15 and March 6, 2024. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding AP registration.

Connor McHugh

Congratulations to Senior Connor McHugh, who was a recent qualifier in the Cressy High School National Sailing Championship at Lavallette Yacht Club. As a result, Connor is only 1 of 12 high school sailors who qualified to compete in New Orleans at the end of October at the Southern Yacht Club. When he is not attending classes at North, Connor spends all his free time sailing Lasres (known now as the ILCA class) across the country and internationally. During this past year, Connor competed in the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in Biscayne Bay, Florida, finishing 8th out of 113 national and international competitors in December. In March, he sailed in the Fort Lauderdale Olympic Classic and the Midwinters East regatta in Clearwater, FL. In June, he participated in the US Sailing Youth Championship hosted by Roger Williams University in RI. July took Connor to Dziwnow, Poland, for the ILCA 6 Youth World Championships and Los Angeles for the North American Championships. Connor ended his summer placing 5th out of 90 sailors at the ILCA National Championships in Grosse Point, Michigan. We all look forward to seeing where the seas take Connor and wish him Fair Winds and Following Seas.

Girls Soccer

The North Hunterdon Girls Soccer Team is off to a strong start to the 2023 campaign. They are currently 4-3-1, but look to build on their win total as they move into a very busy October. The team participated in the Mountains vs. Seas tournament at the Iron Peak sports complex and defeated Shore Regional 1-0 in overtime in the annual tournament that raised money to support Sarah’s Fight for Hope Foundation. The future looks bright as the JV team is currently 2-1-1 including an impressive win last week over Somerville HS.

The girls held their annual Gold Game for childhood cancer awareness and raised over $425 in gift cards and monetary donations in support of Goryeb Children’s Hospital. The team’s motto this year is “WE/ME”. This we-over-me mentality can be seen in the many team-building events that the girls have enjoyed so far this season including a pasta dinner & various fundraisers. The annual Car Wash was postponed due to rain, but it is rescheduled for 10/15.
