A year of Latin American learning

As we enter the holidays, CLAS is proud to celebrate another exciting year of Latin American research, teaching, and outreach. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, 2021 was marked by many successes:

• A record number of FLAS fellows improved their Portuguese and Quechua
• Diverse audiences enjoyed lecture series on Afro-Brazilian arts and activism, Latin American language inclusivity, Bolivian film, and social change across Abya Yala
• Affiliates across campus created new Latin American-centered curricula
• OSU Libraries expanded its Latin American holdings with new special collections
• K-12 teachers incorporated Latin American children's literature into their classrooms
• Latin American artists, authors, linguists, pedagogues, and performers shared their expertise with the community
• ... and much, much more!

Latin American Courses for Spring 2022

Start the new year off right with these courses on Latin America!

SPANISH 4516 - The Formation of Bolivian National Cultures:
Overview of Bolivian literatures and cultures, and how they reflect the country's identities as well as its changing social, political, and cultural realities in the process of national formation. (TuTh 3:55PM-5:15PM).

This Level 1 CCP course is taught in English and meets the FLAS Area Studies requirement.

COMPSTD 3501 - Humanitarianism: Ideals & Realities in the Contemporary World:
This course will explore the history, dominant discourses, and practices of aid (governmental and grassroots) to Central America and examine why some humanitarian projects flourish whereas other, equally well-intended ones do not. Bring your own experiences of and questions about international voluntary service to this course. Our goal will be to think creatively about a better future for all. (TuTh 3:55PM-5:15PM).

This is a Cultures and Ideas GE course.
