Parish News - February 26, 2025

To St. John's Parishioners and Friends:

I am humbled that the vestry has entrusted me with the position of senior warden. I look forward to working hard on behalf of the congregation in the coming year. Our family first started attending St. Johns in 1996, and we have celebrated many milestones here.

Although my career has often taken me away from northern Virginia for extended periods of time, I am grateful for the dedication of the many volunteers who have come before me and who have helped to maintain the vitality of St John's over the years. I am particularly appreciative that Val Tucker has agreed to serve another year as junior warden. I also want to thank Susie Pike for sharing the benefit of her experience as our most recent senior warden.

In the coming weeks, I will be seeking out those who have been leading the various ministries around the church to better understand our strengths. In the meantime, I hope that anyone with ideas about how we can better serve the congregation and better carry out our vision of healing, hope, and hospitality will feel free to get in touch.

Sincerely,

Lisa

WORSHIP

Sunday's Sermon

What if forgiveness is Christianity 101? What if it all starts with the ability and willingness to forgive and be forgiven? What if your introduction to Christianity wasn't a Bible overview but a class on how you ought to love and forgive your enemies? Can you even teach that? How do you turn the other cheek exactly? What if we've got it all backward? It's not (only) about believing in Jesus. It's about following him.

Upcoming Readings for the The Last Sunday after the Epiphany

Let us prepare our hearts and mind for worship:

First Reading: Exodus 34:29-35

After ascending the mountain and speaking with the Lord, the face of Moses shines miraculously. Because of this God-given radiance, he veils his face whenever he appears among the people.

Response: Psalm 99

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2

We need never lose heart if, by God’s mercy, we have been called to be a follower of Jesus. God’s glory will be revealed in all its fullness to those who are Christ’s disciples.

Gospel: Luke 9:28-36, [37-43a]

Jesus shines forth with dazzling brilliance in the presence of chosen disciples. His appearance with Moses and Elijah reveals him to be the fulfillment of all the law and the prophets.

Upcoming Readings for Ash Wednesday

First Reading: Isaiah 58:1-12

God seeks a fast that reflects holy compassion, mercy, and transformation.

Response: Psalm 103:8-14

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10

God works in power through Saint Paul’s weakness, and Paul rejoices in this.

Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6,16-21

Jesus calls his followers to a humility that requires no acknowledgment or praise for living righteously.

Lent Madness

Lent Madness is upon us! Lent Madness is an offering of Forward Movement that pits 32 saints of the church against each other in an alternative March Madness bracket for the ages. Participants vote for their favorite saint in daily matchups over the course of Lent until one is awarded the "Golden Halo." Visit Lent Madness to learn more about these saints and to vote for your favorites. Follow the action online, or in the St. John's breezeway, where our bracket poster will be updated. Thanks to Lisa Heller for bringing Lent Madness to St. John's.

Already 28 people are dead and more than 130,000 had to evacuate their homes – many of whom no longer have a home to which they can return.
