Let's Catch-up: December 2021
Our mission is to empower families to foster resilience and prioritize mental health and emotional wellness in their children through educational programming, access to resources, and peer support.
Our Youth Mental Health Crisis
We've heard the news and taken the phone calls. We see it in our own children. There is a youth mental health crisis unfolding before our very eyes. Just last week, the U.S Surgeon General issued an advisory detailing the seriousness of the mental health challenges among children, adolescents and young adults.
The advisory acknowledges that even before the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health issues were significant for young people in the U.S. and around the worldwide, and they have only gotten worse.

  • Pre-pandemic: 20% of children ages 3 to 17 were dealing with a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder.

  • During the pandemic:
  • Symptoms of anxiety and depression doubled among youth globally.

  • In early 2021, emergency room visits in the U.S. for suspected suicide attempts increased by 51% for adolescent girls and 4% for adolescent boys compared to the same time in 2019.

The Surgeon General reminds all of us of the important role we play in addressing these issues:

“Supporting the mental health of children and youth will require a whole-of-society effort to address long standing challenges, strengthen the resilience of young people, support their families and communities, and mitigate the pandemic’s mental health impacts.”
-Dr. Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General

When a child is struggling, it impacts every family member.

Let’s come together as a community to support our children’s mental health and #TalkAboutIt.

Join a CATCH Coffee Talk or Parents Connect. Reach out for support.

We know it's not easy to reach out for support, but once you take that first step, you'll realize you are not alone. Knowing others are walking in your shoes can make all the difference.

Parents Connect
New Groups Forming in January
When your child is struggling with their mental health, one of the things you can do to help them is find support for yourself.

Parents Connect is a six-week program that brings parents and caregivers together in small groups once a week to talk about the challenges they face raising children with mental health struggles. (If you are looking for a drop-in program, check out our coffee talks!)
Parents Connect
Here’s what previous Parents Connect participants say:

“To be in a group with parents who 'get you' instinctively was priceless; it's something that I have not felt since my daughter was diagnosed with mental health issues. The camaraderie and support that a group of strangers who never met each other in person could develop in 6 weeks was striking.”

"We spend so much time supporting and caring for our children, this forum allows us to find ways to care for ourselves."

"I was so scared to come and share my story, but it was the best thing I've done for myself since my child was diagnosed with depression."
Parenting is hard. Parenting a child with mental health struggles is even harder. Sign up for Parents Connect.

We've all been there.

"I should drag my entire family to a holiday party even though my kids are exhausted."

"I should serve a homemade gourmet spread when my in-laws come over."

Should you? Really?

In this guest essay, Julie Gold, LCSW, Gold Counseling Services, writes about the dangers of shoulds and how to counter them. Read

Happy holidays? More like unhappy holidays for this parent. After struggling with an anxious kid through all the stressors - his racing mind, family dinners, and holiday travel - she's decided, sometimes it's ok to just make mac 'n cheese. Read.
