THIS WEEK AT ST JOHN'S

Dear Friends,

Suddenly the snow is on the ground. After a warm spell that felt like late summer, it sure does propel our minds forward into thoughts of Advent and Christmas.

So let’s look ahead. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Sunday this year. And like any other Sunday, we will have a service at 10:15 a.m. I would invite your input on whether we would also have a service at 8:00 a.m. on these days. Please let me know especially if that is your regular (or occasional) preferred worship time. Working backwards to Christmas Eve, the services will be at 7:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Christmas doesn’t just arrive out of the blue. Advent comes before as a season of four Sundays with their own special quality. We will light the Advent candles each week at the beginning of our Sunday services. And by popular request, we encourage you to observe Advent every day as part of your home meals.

We are providing a new Advent Candlelighting booklet and an opportunity to make your own wreath. This will take place as a special gathering on Sunday, November 27 immediately following the 10:15 worship service. See the details and sign up below in this newsletter if you would like to make a wreath(note: wreath $25 or candles and greenery $10).

We are planning this as a festive occasion and we invite everyone to stay for a sandwich lunch (whether or not you are making a wreath).

And that’s not all: Stay for the Christmas Honey & Bake Sale! Proceeds support St John’s Church as we look ahead to the conclusion of this budget year and as we continue to serve in the wider community. We would be very grateful for your donations of Christmas Baking: cookies, loafs, cakes – all your favourite ones. You can drop them off on Friday, November 25 during office hours (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) or bring them with you early on Sunday before the worship service. Please sign up to let us know what you’re planning to bring. You can sign up online through this newsletter, or this coming Sunday on a physical (paper) sign-up sheet.

COVID Safety Update from the Diocese of Ottawa:

“Winter is on the horizon, people are indoors more, and COVID infections are on the rise. Throughout the pandemic, our response to the reality of the virus has been science-based and in line with public health, and this latest challenge must be met the same way. Effective this Sunday, October 30th, all liturgical leaders — including clergy, choirs, servers, chalice bearers, readers, intercessors, and sidespeople/greeters — must wear a mask before, during and after services except when speaking into a microphone, eating or drinking.”

ST JOHN'S DEMYSTIFIED

Over the past 3 weeks, we have had wonderful attendance and participation in St John’s Demystified: An Introduction to Christianity as Practiced at St John’s.

This Saturday is the final session. By request, we will be considering the death of Jesus on the cross. How significant is Jesus on the Cross to who we are as Christians? There are four main ways of understanding how this is a salvation event. If you have found it challenging to put it in your own words, we hope this is helpful and empowering.

This series of four sessions is intended to be helpful for you whether you are:

-         Leaving behind unhelpful or even toxic versions of religion

-         Coming into church life from a secular perspective and wondering about the sacred

-         Looking to renew your own ability to put into words how faith is important to you

If you missed it (or missed some of it) this time around, we hope to offer it again. We welcome your feedback to be even more ready for your interests next time around. You’re welcome for this final session even if it’s your first one. We will be meeting in The Well space (lower level of the church building). Starting at 9.45/10am.
