Mission & Vision
Ocean & Bay Intergroup is dedicated to supporting individuals in need of recovery from compulsive eating (e.g.: overeating, bulimia, anorexia) through carrying the OA message and empowering all meetings within the Intergroup.
1. Help members strengthen their personal recovery

NOTES FROM THE REGION 6 CONVENTION: Oct 2019

Stop asking "Why? - Why do I have this disease?" That is the most immature question. It is similar to children questioning their parents "Why?" when they can't have something or do something. We just don't like it -- that we are compulsive eaters - we just are. Many of us are emotionally immature, grandiose, and self-centered. The disease is in our mind, and we have to change our spiritual outlook on life. Our obsessive-compulsive behaviors spill over from food to seeking and waiting for recognition -- to wanting and waiting for someone else to change. These attitudes 'infiltrate' our personalities.' We chose food over relationships. Our underlying problem is our relationship with self. We try to 'control our environment' with food - we have to learn how to deal with our own feelings. We, compulsive eaters, need to change and not wait! 'What thrives in darkness, will die in the sunlight.' Diabetics don't wait to start insulin - if they do, they risk complications such as blindness, nerve damage and kidney damage. We can't wait either! We 'have to' accept we have a problem in order to recover. We need to learn actions
and behaviors to help us 'stay stopped.'

Food for Thought

Fear of Giving
It is often the fear of rejection, which makes us afraid to give of ourselves. The person who is reluctant to share at a meeting may be holding back because of this fear. To share is to reveal who we are and where we are. If we feel inadequate, we do not want to expose this imagined inadequacy to other people.
If our self-image is too grand and inflated, we cannot possibly live up to it in reality. Expecting ourselves to be perfect sets us up for frustration and fear, since we know deep down that we do not measure up to our image of perfection.
With humility comes the willingness to give of what we have and what we are right now, without waiting until we are more eloquent or more accomplished. What we have to share is what someone else needs to receive. By focusing more on the needs of others and less on the imaginary concept of ourselves, which is our ego, we learn to overcome our fear of giving. What we have to give now is enough for today.
May I not be afraid to give.

Step Eleven:
Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with [our Higher Power], praying only for knowledge of [HP]'s will for us and the power to carry that out.

"In OA, we share a belief that we can each recover through a spiritual relationship with a Power that is greater than ourselves alone. While based on this shared belief, our program does not promote or favor any particular concept of the exact nature of this Power.
In order to recover from compulsive eating and other compulsive food behaviors, we need an ongoing relationship with this Higher Power, and we find having complete freedom to seek that relationship is a vital aspect of our program.
Meditation is our way of quieting our minds so we can get better acquainted with this Higher Power of ours. As with prayer, there is no one right way to practice meditation...Meditation is an action that gives us much-needed practice in the art of sitting still and opening our hearts to receive spiritual nourishment...Meditation offers us a way to stop running and to relax without eating compulsively"
Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, films, television, and other public media of communication.

"Use of media in a nonprofessional way allows OA to attract those who are ready to take advantage of what we have to offer. Few of us who are now part of this Fellowship tried OA the first time we heard about it. We may have needed this recovery program then, but it took a while for some of us to decide to come and be willing to work the Steps. Until we were ready, nobody could have "sold" us this program. As it was with us, so it is with other people who may benefit from OA. We carry the message best when we share frankly what OA is and what our own experience has been. In respecting the Eleventh Tradition, we respect the right of others to choose OA for themselves."
