PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING

Neighbors at town hall discuss allocating $1M

Residents of the 02908/02909 zip codes gathered at the Smith Hill Library on Nov. 16 to discuss ideas for allocating $1 million to improve the health of their community. ONE|NB hosted this session as part of the Nine Neighborhood Fund, which is in the process of gathering ideas before a December 9 deadline. The fund is part of a process known as "participatory budgeting," giving residents of a community the ability to democratically decide how to allocate money to better where they live. The website DecideRI.org has launched to give residents a place to submit ideas and learn more about the process. The town hall session is just one method of outreach as part of the process.

IMPROVING ECONOMIC MOBILITY & HEALTH IN CENTRAL PROVIDENCE

'Tapping Into the Roadmap' gathers

More than 70 people turned out on Wednesday, Nov. 16 to discuss ways to improve the health and well-being of Central Providence over the next 10 years.

Participants – partners from the Central Providence Collaborative, businesses, and residents – reviewed and offered amendments to a plan developed under the guidance of consulting group Greater Good Studio and Central Providence Opportunities: A Health Equity Zone.

ONE Neighborhood Builders is the backbone agency of CPO-HEZ.

The plan, called the "Central Providence Roadmap," aims to achieve one over-arching goal: “All residents of Central Providence will live healthy, stable lives and be empowered to impact the conditions of their community.”

Facilitators from ONE|NB guided the group discussions, and the results will guide the next phase of the roadmap planning before the next session, slated for January.

Architect renderings show plans for St. Patrick's Place in Cumberland, left, and new apartments called Broad Street Homes in Central Falls, which will be across the street from the former police station, which also is being renovated for affordable housing.

As part of ONE|NB's continued expansion outside of Providence, plans have advanced for St. Patrick's Place in Cumberland and for Broad Street Homes in Central Falls. Both developments have received master plan approvals from their communities and are in pre-development.

St. Patrick's Place includes the preservation and adaptive reuse of the former St. Patrick Church in Cumberland. It will include 44 new affordable apartments, 12 reserved for older adults.

Broad Street Homes is a proposal to build 47 affordable apartments by converting the former police station and by constructing a new 30-unit, 4-story building on Broad Street in Central Falls.
