Highlights of Our Life and Work
September 24, 2021
Greetings!

This Sunday we will be coming to worship in-person at the Crescent site at 10 am. A recorded version of the morning worship will be available later in the day on our YouTube channel.
Worship this Week
Sunday Worship - September 26, 2021
We invite you to wear orange shirts this Sunday to remember and honour Indigenous children who were taken from their communities and families to residential schools.

Orange Shirt Day originates from the story of Phyllis Webstad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. In 1973, on her first day at St. Joseph’s Residential School in Williams Lake, BC, Phyllis’s shiny new orange shirt was stripped from her, never to be seen again. That marked the beginning of Phyllis’s long separation from her family and community, a separation caused by actions of the church and federal government.

Orange Shirt Day is a time for us all to remember those events, their ongoing impact, and just as importantly the continuing strength and resilience of Indigenous peoples.

Highlights

We are happy to be able to worship together in person once again.

We will continue to ask people to pre-register for each Sunday Worship service, sending the registration form out each Wednesday, and using a wait list when we reach capacity. You can register right up until Saturday evening. If you get the wait list alert and space opens up you will be contacted by Saturday evening. After the office closes Friday at noon please use [email protected] so Victoria Jones can receive cancellations and answer any questions you may have.

To make it easier for people to find appropriate seating, while following the SLC approved Safety Plan, we will try lowering the number of people for services going forward. We will monitor the numbers weekly and make adjustments to the pre-registration numbers as needed.

We value the physical and spiritual well-being of all who enter our buildings for worship. We value caring for one another as Jesus taught us. We trust that each of us will follow Jesus' command to "love our neighbour as yourself" by adhering to these temporary measures that we prayerfully offer for this time.
  • We will not ask people to publicly declare their vaccination status. However, we ask that those who come to in-person worship be fully vaccinated.
  • If you are unwell with a fever, chills and/or a cough or sore throat, please stay home until you are feeling better.
  • Please wear a mask when you are in the church.
  • The greeters will welcome you at a table in the covered entryway and invite you to sanitize your hands and sign in. Those who are joining us in the sanctuary for the first time ever will be directed to the guest book table to receive a special welcome.
  • The little wooden church offering receptacle will be on a table in the narthex for those who wish to deposit an offering envelope.
  • Please wait for ushers to direct you to seating areas. Please give yourself and others space as you move through the sanctuary and when you are seated. You have your choice of being in the on-camera area or the camera free zone for those who do not wish to be on the video.
  • The Balcony will be reserved for those who are unable to wear a mask for extended periods due to medical conditions and for those who have scent allergies.
  • The minister leading worship will direct you regarding humming or singing the hymns as they are being sung by our designated, masked singers in the choir loft.
  • All of us who are offering leadership in worship today have been fully vaccinated
  • No coffee will be served at our worship services for the time being. You are welcome to visit in the parking lot before and after worship.

At this time, we encourage those who are not vaccinated to join us for worship through the recorded service, which will be available on YouTube as soon as possible, hopefully sometime Sunday afternoon.

Due to the increased risks with the variants and schools opening, we encourage families with children under the age of 12, who cannot be vaccinated, to come to Wild Church (outdoors) instead of coming to the Crescent Site.

Christian Formation Survey
Before we go too far down the path of planning, we would really like to hear from you about what kind of Christian formation (sometimes called Christian education or Faith formation) opportunities would interest you the most.

Here is a link to a survey which will take you about a minute to complete. We would be grateful to receive your response.

Completing the survey does not oblige you to participate in whatever programs end up being offered. Thanks in advance for giving a minute of your time to this.
Remembering our beloved friend
Many thanks to everyone who contributed to Bruce's farewell gift.
The total contributed was $4,375. The Farewell Planning group purchased the gift of the beautiful stole from these funds and the balance was given to Bruce at his farewell celebration.
The first meeting is this Thursday, September 30 from 1 to 2:30 pm in the Narthex at the Crescent site. The book for discussion is The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd, which tells the story of Ana, who says she was Jesus’s wife. The novel is available at local libraries and bookstores, in electronic and hard copy formats.

The book club will be meeting on the last Thursday of each month (except December). The church’s COVID guidelines will apply to in-person participants. Contact person is Carol Vance, 604-594-3113.
Birthdays are a wonderful reason to celebrate and call someone to have a chat!

With your permission we are gathering first names only along with your month of birth, so that our community can celebrate 12 times a year bringing to mind these special days!

Please send your information to Janice Lesley at [email protected] or call 604-812-2159.

On Wednesday, October 6, October birthdays will be celebrated on zoom during coffee hour
Wild Church - Sunday, Oct 17 at 2 pm.
Semiahmoo Fish & Game Club (1284 184th St. Surrey)
Rev. Janice invites you to join us for Wild Church on the third Sunday of each month. Wild Church is similar to Cafe Church al Fresco. We will gather in local parks to experience the wisdom and presence of God in creation and to practice seeing all of creation as our neighbours. Check out the cover story in the Oct/Nov issue of Broadview Magazine to learn more about Wild Church.

This is a family friendly worship experience. We really hope that the young families and children of the congregation will come and join us. Bring your suggestions for where we might gather for Wild Church on October 17. Dress for the weather.
Zoom Coffee Hour continues but NOT after church on Sunday morning.

Join us as we check in with one another and discuss questions about life and faith.
You can join by Zoom or by telephone. We meet all together and then move into break-out rooms of four or five people.
Here's how to join us: Click here to join us via zoom video on your computer.

More information to come. Contact Kathy Booth ([email protected]) for more info.

Community Dinners: Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the search for a site for the Community Dinners will not continue at this time. Many thanks to Donna Roy for all her efforts to try locate a site.
