Lisa McLendon receives KU teaching award
Congratulations to Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, for receiving the Bob and Kathie Taylor Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is presented annually to a longstanding KU lecturer or other non-tenure track faculty or academic staff member whose career exemplifies best the commitment of the university to outstanding teaching and the long-term success of students. McLendon received the award last week from Provost Barbara Bichelmeyer and Chancellor Doug Girod at the Center for Teaching Excellence Teaching Summit.
During the Adobe Education Summit on July 27-29, Heather Lawrenz led three roundtable sessions on teaching Illustrator and InDesign. On Aug. 4, Lawrenz spoke for an Adobe Education Leader broadcast on leading creatively. The broadcast was hosted live on Adobe for Education's YouTube, Facebook and Twitter channels. 
RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Assistant Professor Chris Etheridge was a part of a team of researchers who were awarded the Grinnell College Social Good Award by the Summer Institute for Computational Social Science and Grinnell College's Data Analysis and Social Inquiry Lab. The ongoing project studies how journalists are experiencing harassment online and what they can do to address it.

Doctoral students' paper "Race/Ethnicity, Online Information & COVID-19 Vaccination: Study of Minority Immigrants’ Internet Use for Health-related Information" received the 2021 Carolyn Stroman Award, which is presented to graduate students who are presenting research for the first time in the AEJMC's Minorities and Communication (MAC) Division. The authors of the paper include Annalise Baines, Muhammad Ittefaq, Fatemeh Shayesteh, Ursula Kamanga and Yuchen Liu.

Doctoral students Matthew Blomberg and Darcey AltschwagerProfessor Hyunjin Seo, and Ellie Booton (j’21) and Maxine Nwachukwu (j’21) are co-authors of a research paper, “Digital Divide and Marginalized Women during COVID-19,” which has been accepted for publication in Information, Communication and Society. Doctoral student Harrison Rosenthal’s paper “Speech Imperialization? Situating American Parrhesia in an Isegoria World” 35 INT’L J. SEMIOTICS L. (forthcoming 2022), was a finalist for the 2021 Harry W. Stonecipher Award for Distinguished Research on Media Law and Policy.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities University Workforce Development Program (CCUWDP) is offering 50 workforce development program positions across the nation, and applications are now available. This is a wonderful opportunity for students looking to gain experience in the energy and transportation areas. The Inez Y. Kaiser GKC-PRSA Memorial Scholarship, valued at $2,500, is open for applications. The deadline to apply is Sept. 24. It is open to all Black juniors or seniors enrolled in strategic communications, public relations or communications programs at an accredited college or university in Kansas or Missouri. The student must live in Kansas or Missouri at the time of application. Preference is given to PRSSA members and affiliate chapters. However, membership or affiliation is not a requirement. Applicants must have earned at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. The application should reflect the applicant’s commitment to volunteerism, a hallmark of Inez Kaiser’s legacy. Two scholarship recipients will be announced at the GKC-PRSA Chapter Prism event on Oct. 21. Apply here.

J-School students are invited to attend Spark KC!, a marketing and advertising networking event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24 at Pennway Place, 2500 W. Pennway St., Kansas City, Missouri. Students will receive advice from local ad experts and constructive feedback on their portfolios and resumes. Students will gain exposure to potential opportunities within the marketing and advertising industry, as well as rub elbows with local companies looking for fresh talent. To help ensure resumes are recruiter-ready, a virtual one-on-one resume review is available Sept. 15 to the first 75 student registrants. Remote mental health services
Counseling & Psychological Services and Student Affairs have partnered with LifeWorks, leaders in remote counseling support, to introduce a new service for KU students: My Student Support Program (My SSP). My SSP provides 24/7 remote mental health and wellbeing support to students through a mobile app. Through My SSP, students can access self-directed psychoeducational content and connect with clinical professionals who are experienced in helping students cope with the unique challenges they face. There is no cost to the student.
Peer listening
HOPE@CAPS Mental Health Peer Educators are a team of currently enrolled KU students who are certified and trained in providing support, education and resources to their peers who may be experiencing distress that might not rise to the level of need for mental health intervention at CAPS. Starting Sept. 1, the J-School is on the Peer Listening schedule on Tuesdays from 9-11 a.m. at Stauffer-Flint Hall.

Alumna wins prize for children's literature
Cynthia Leitich Smith, j’91, has been selected as the 2021 winner of the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature. Awarded in alternating years with the prestigious Neustadt International Prize for Literature, the biennial NSK Prize recognizes outstanding achievement in the world of children’s and young adult literature.
Leitich Smith is a New York Times and Publishers Weekly best-selling YA author of the Tantalize series and Feral trilogy. Read the press release here.
