CALLED TO BE A WATCHMAN
In the Book of Ezekiel God gives great revelation to Ezekiel through visions and words. He was a prophet that God used to bring current and then future words from the LORD.
Ezekiel was not just a prophet. He was a watchman. A watchman hears from God, is always watching the enemy’s moves, and warns the people of danger on the road they are travelling, and often it is something in their lives that needs correction.
In chapter 33, Ezekiel is told by God that he was called as a watchman to God’s people. A watchman would stand on a wall, or a tower, or a high place in his community watching for the enemy. When he saw the enemy coming, he was able to warn the people by sounding the trumpet which let them know of the approaching danger.
God tells Ezekiel that he was going to bring the sword upon the land (vs. 2) and that if Ezekiel warned the people as a watchman that it was coming, and they didn’t listen to the warning that their blood would be on their own heads and not on his hands. But if he did not warn the people then their blood would be upon Ezekiel.
I learned this by revelation. Over forty years ago a person from a cult knocked on my door. They started to talk about their magazine and end times, and I told them I had my own church and shut the door. Immediately I heard the voice of the Lord speak to me, “Their blood is on your hands.” I had no idea what he meant so I went to the scriptures and found Ezekiel 33. I was terrified at what I read. God was going to hold me responsible for not sharing the gospel with them. I did not warn them, and now I was held accountable, even in my ignorance. I immediately regretted what I had done and repented.
Little did I know, but God had called me to be a watchman, and I had not warned these people of their error.
I determined that would not happen again. I would take every opportunity to warn those that are lost or in bondage to a cult about Jesus. I would give them an opportunity to receive Christ. Has every person I told listened? No, but there are those that did. I will not be held accountable for those that rejected Christ.
I believe God has called each of us to be “watchmen” for Jesus. I believe each of us are obligated to warn those that do not know him that judgment is coming, and they must choose on this side of death whom they would serve.
God takes the watchman seriously my friends. We are commanded by God to go into all the world and share the gospel. It is not a suggestion. It is a command. (Matthew 28:19) Are you doing that? If not, it is time to start. Be that watchman for Jesus!
