The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a call for public comments on proposed scientific questions to inform the Dietary Guidelines, 2025-2030. Please submit comments between April 15, 2022 and May 16, 2022.

The authors propose a framework for racialized marketing, describing how the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages to Black and Latino consumers results from the intersection of a business model in which profits come primarily from marketing an unhealthy mix of products, standard targeted marketing strategies, and societal forces of structural racism, and contributes to health disparities.

A new book by UCSF Assoc. Prof. of Medicine Dr. Rupa Marya and Research Professor Dr. Raj Patel, reveals the interconnectedness of social and economic injustice, the environment, and human health.

Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice examines inflammation of both the body and the world. Taking readers on a tour of the human body, Patel and Marya argue that the food people eat, the environments they inhabit, and the injustices they experience impact everything from respiratory to reproductive systems. “Deep medicine, for us, is the understanding that health can no longer be viewed as something we can try to get as individuals,” Marya says. “We have to understand that health must be attained in the context of our communities, of our families, where we are in our societies, and in relationship to the web of life.”

Changing Policies and Practices to Implement Beverage Consensus Recommendations
Survey of Pediatric and Family Dentists

Healthy Eating Research (HER), a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), invites Pediatric or Family Dentists who work with young children ages 0-5 years and their families to complete a 10-15 minute survey as part of their implementation research.

The results of this survey will help inform the development of educational content for health care practitioners with the goal of facilitating implementation of the HER beverage recommendations into patient counseling practices. More information about this research.
