5th Cohort Class of 2022

The Class of 2022 were given a challenge this summer to visit a college of their choice and complete a college application. Students that accepted the challenge were placed in a raffle to win a microwave, dorm refrigerator, coffee maker, LMC t-shirts, Little Caesar's gift cards, and a candy/free movie rental bucket.

6th Cohort Class of 2023

Students from the Class of 2023 bravely started their college career in the middle of a pandemic. Their College Summer Success Course was remote and their college courses were as well. Other than rotating through our building a couple days a week, they missed the time to bond and form the relationships that are foundational to the cohort experience and expanding their support system.

We were happy to be able to offer a trip to Oval Beach in Saugatuck and a hike up the backside of Mt. Baldhead! Although challenging, all made it to the top! Relationships are growing and strengthening and memories were made. They continue to face tough situations head on and we are proud of their resilience!

7th Cohort Class of 2024

Every summer each incoming cohort gets the chance to tour Lake Michigan College's main campus in Napier, Michigan. This year after the tour, students did community service hours by helping MOSAIC, a second-hand retail store in Benton Harbor, move to their new location. Then the cohort was treated with a picnic, cooled off at Tiscornia Beach in St. Joseph, and posed for our traditional lighthouse photo. Memories and friendships were made by all.

Allegan Advantage

We welcomed an additional 18 students to our Allegan Advantage program this Fall. These students are also in Lake Michigan College classes with Early College Students, but are not doing the 13th year. Requirements for dual enrollment through LMC consists of a GPA of 2.5 unweighted or a 5 on the Accuplacer/Writeplacer. Spring Semester starts January 10th. If you or someone you know is interested in attending and is a Junior or Senior, please email evy.houser@alleganaesa.org for more information.

Welcome Dean Cooper!

The Early College program was fortunate enough to welcome guest speaker Major Cooper, the newly hired Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity at Lake Michigan College. Dean Cooper's topic was "Disruptive Dialogue" . Building on the idea that no one likes conflict or difficult conversations, we all need to have boundaries. Boundaries that we need to honor for ourselves and make known to others when these boundaries are being violated. Specific strategies were outlined for students:

Sandwich Method

Explain the Boundary

Use I Statements

Outline Consequences

Follow through when your boundaries

are violated

Multiple course sections combined for an hour to be able to attend in the auditorium. This included History 202, Public Speaking 101, Race and Ethnic Relations 205, and Human Development 203.

Sociology instructor Myrna McNitt's motivation to organize and promote events like this is "When the Early College offers joined classes it will strengthen the students' sense of being connected with a wider learning experience to help them apply critical thinking to their educational experience." Thank you Dean Cooper!

Allegan County Fair Parade

The Allegan County Fair has been around for 162 years. One of the great traditions is the parade. Participants include many organizations from around Allegan County, including the Allegan County Area Technological and Education Center. The theme for this year's parade was "Autumn Fair and All Its Flair". Many of our Early College and Allegan Advantage students joined in the 1.5-mile walk from downtown Allegan to the Fairgrounds handing out promotional items to the crowd. Not only did the students earn volunteer hours for their participation but also free admission to the fair and our float took 2nd place. Thanks to all who participated!

Early College Instructor Earns Doctorate Degree

One of our early college English instructors has just earned her doctorate degree and we can not be happier for her. Patricia Youngs, who has also earned the following degrees M.A., M.Ed., ELL can now add a Doctorate to her list.

After three years, one month, and 17 days she has met her career goal by receiving her doctoral degree in Instructional Leadership from Northcentral University in Nashville Tennessee. Dr. Youngs is a role model for our students showing them true grit, fortitude, and determination while achieving her goal.

We are so fortunate to be able to now have 3 instructors in our early college program with such high honors: Dr. Youngs, English Composition I & II, Dr. Hernandez, Introduction to Psychology and Human Development, and Dr. Meyers, Physical Science, Chemistry, and Physics.
