CALL FOR RESEARCH GRANT PROPOSALS

Deadline: October 1

One-year research grants are available to assist Academy of Physical Therapy Education members in conducting research that investigates a question of importance to the advancement of education in physical therapy. In addition to research related to physical therapy education (DPT, PTA), questions related to the education of patients/clients, licensed PTs/PTAs or PT/PTA students will also be considered.

Applications are received and reviewed once yearly for a maximum budget of $25,000. Proposals with budgets less than the maximum $25,000 are welcomed. All budgets are rigorously reviewed and require justification for expenses. Utilizing A Brief Training Module to Orient First Time Clinical Instructors to Clinical Expectations

November 2nd from 7:00-8:00 PM ET

Through discussion during Clinical Education Special Interest Group (PTA CE SIG) meetings, it was apparent that clinical instructors (CIs) serve as an extension of the academic faculty and that there is a lack of formally trained CIs. Studies have shown that there is not only a need for early and ongoing communication between academic faculty and CIs, but also a need for some training to guide novice CIs through the clinical expectations and processes. Authors have discussed that not all Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP) components are needed to meet the needs of today’s CI. The dilemma is that CIs are expected to have minimum requirements and the CCIP program is voluntary, not mandatory. In order to close this gap between CI training and novice CI expectations, we developed a brief training module to guide novice CIs in the processes of orientation, feedback, student/site visit expectations, assessment tool use and grading, and the importance of unique exposures during the clinical experiences. Implementation of this training module is in its early stages. We intend to develop a future survey of CIs that will help to clarify and determine the usefulness and any modifications that may be needed to the training module.

Team-Based Learning in Physical Therapy: Transitioning from Guru to Guide

December 7th

This course will detail the characteristics and learning preferences of current physical therapy students and provide support for the integration of evidence-based teaching and cooperative learning strategies such as team-based learning in healthcare professions. Presenters will explain the components of team-based learning and share best practices and pitfalls when incorporating this engaging instructional approach. At the conclusion, presenters will provide guidelines for selection and examples of didactic content that may be effectively taught via team-based learning.

Registration information coming soon.

ADMISSION NETWORK

The Admissions Network was recently created within the Academic Faculty SIG with the purpose of fostering discussion topics related to recruitment and holistic admissions in PT and PTA education. There will be an opportunity to network, share research and case studies, ask pertinent questions, and disseminate resources.

Mark your calendars! The next virtual event will be Wednesday, November 8th at 7pm EST. Based on survey responses from the first session there was an overwhelming desire to talk about recruitment, so the next session will feature some brief announcements followed by an open discussion about recruitment.

APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP) Level 2

The CCIP Level 2 course brings two constructs together in one professional development program that advances both clinical teaching and best practice when providing student clinical education. Using a case-based and applied approach to education, this program both applies and goes beyond the concepts of the structured and effective learning environment from the CCIP Level 1 course to allow participants to further develop their clinical teaching skills and construct a clinical curriculum. The program’s unique philosophy and design will enable clinical educators to achieve the best outcomes for student learning.
