Rainbow Connects is a program at the new University Hospitals Rainbow Center for Women and Children that links patients and families to resources to address needs related to the social determinants of health such as: food insecurity; utility assistance; clothing; furniture; baby supplies etc. Rainbow Connects hosts two full time employees and relies heavily on volunteers. Volunteers screen patients and families for resource needs, direct them to helpful community resources to address those needs, and when possible, follow-up with screened participants to see if they were able to access the resource or have any additional needs. Volunteers work with each family to select 1-2 resources that are seen as a priority.
Please note that this is a YEAR-LONG service commitment for the entire 2023-2024 academic year.

The mission of Boys Hope Girls Hope is to nurture and guide young people in need to become well-educated, career-ready men and women for others. They specifically work with young people from poverty-stricken communities and provide a support system for them to be successful as they continue on their journey after the program. Boys Hope Girls Hope provides school lessons, summer programs, high school and college tours, group dinners, extracurricular/leisure activities, career exploration, and long-term goal planning. This past semester at Boys Hope Girls Hope, my service group and I worked with the 7th-grade cohort, and we focused primarily on the importance of reading. We introduced the cohort to different genres and also helped them identify their cultural lens and what they personally bring to a story when reading. When entering this unfamiliar yet welcoming environment at Boys Hope Girls Hope there were several things I had to unlearn and leave at the door to be fully present in service. One main thing I had to unlearn was that an individual's current or past situation does not define one’s potential and future. I feel this is also something very relevant to our current society and should be unlearned while embracing any new experience. Along with having to unlearn a couple of things at Boys Hope Girls Hope, I also did learn quite a bit in my service experience as well. After witnessing how dedicated and hard-working the scholars maintained after facing several obstacles this semester, I learned just how powerful and impactful resilience is when achieving your goals. I also learned from the scholars how and when to take a step back from work and school to enjoy the simple things in life, which I’m very grateful for.
