Closed to in-person services: Wednesday (temporary), Friday

Temporary signs don't belong in the right-of-way

Voting day is getting closer, and political signs are appearing on lawns and along roads. Temporary signs placed in the public right-of-way can cause safety issues and are illegal on Washington County streets.

It's not just political signs! Real estate, garage sale and other signs can block traffic signs, signals and pedestrian access. Signs attached to traffic signposts, streetlights or utility poles are also illegal.

The public right-of-way usually includes roadway, ditches, shoulders and sidewalks. As a rule of thumb, any area between utility poles on both sides of the road is typically in the right-of-way. Signs there are illegal and can be removed by our road crews. These rules only apply in unincorporated Washington County.

To request a sign removal, submit a service request or call 503-846-7623.
