NEWS - Sept. 27, 2021
Well, I'm back. Mostly. This moving business is far more disruptive than all those television ads would have you believe. I finally got my servers running this morning, but printing and webinars are still off-line. Sigh...

During the time this newsletter was off-line there were three ground-breaking announcements that I want to focus on this week. (Next week, I'll get back to covering news and providing tutorials as usual.)

What makes these three important is the impact they are likely to have on our industry; what pundits like to call "inflection points." I've written a brief article on each so that you can add your own comments and read the comments of others.

Announcement 1: Adobe acquires Frame.io. This $1.27 billion transaction forcefully drives home that remote workflows in post-production are here to stay. Huddling the entire creative team in a small, dark edit bay is no longer necessary. Instead, we are moving into a global workforce based on who you know, not on who lives near you. The changes to post-production labor will be profound.

Announcement 2: Apple announced the ability to refocus video in post from an iPhone 13 Pro in an upcoming version of Final Cut Pro and iMovie. Think about that for a minute. We've always been able to color grade in post. Now, we can refocus! Imagine what this means for every other high-end camera manufacturer?!

Announcement 3: NAB canceled the 2021 NAB Show. Unlike many other tech companies these days, NAB decided not to follow the money but to respect their audiences of exhibitors and attendees. They didn't have to, they could have simply taken the money and let the market sort it out. But, they followed their brain, not their wallet. This decision was smart and brave and shows long-term thinking.

Each of these three announcements will have ripple effects far beyond the companies involved. As the rate of technological change in media continues to accelerate, our challenge, as media creators, is to figure out how to safely ride the wave while, at the same time, still make a living. It won't be easy.

My weekly newsletters resume with this issue. Webinars will re-start the second week of October. The restart date for The Inside Tips is still in discussion.

It is good to be back - I've missed chatting with you. Feel free to suggest subjects for webinars and tutorials. In the meantime, stay healthy, safe and productive. Until next week, edit well.
