Bloom Energy Supports STEM and Advance Manufacturing Programs
Bloom Energy employees, Brian Gary, Rosette Gillan and Aimee Dubois, volunteered at the FAME Summer Program 2021 to raise students’ awareness of Bloom Energy’s STEM career opportunities and the Career Pathway to Bloom. Pictured far left is Lakia Belcher, and far right is Rahmeika Jones, both from FAME Education and Strategic Outreach.
Bloom Energy employees understand that jobs involving science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are among the fastest growing careers. Bloom Energy proudly supports STEM and Advance Manufacturing programs that seek to excite, engage and empower students in grades K-12, with a specific focus on under-represented minorities and girls, to pursue STEM careers. Bloom has expressed excitement about being a part of the Delaware Foundation for Science and Math Education.

Bloom’s Joseph Iannone Joins DFSME Board of Directors
Recently, Joseph Iannone, Senior Manager of Process Engineering at Bloom Energy joined the Delaware Foundation for Science and Math Education Board of Directors. As a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Joe has over 20 years manufacturing experience working in various engineering roles in the automotive, chemical, consumer goods, and energy industries.

Joe started with Bloom over 8 years ago as part of the Delaware plant startup team and has helped start up the three additional facilities Bloom currently operates in the state. As a father, Joe believes, “While not every child will be interested in a STEM career, it is important that they are given the opportunity to make that decision.”

First-of-its-Kind Partnership Supporting STEM,
Career and Technical Education Statewide
The Delaware Department of Education (DDOE), DuPont and Discovery Education recently launched a new, first-of-its-kind partnership that will increase student access to high-quality STEM instructional resources, as well as instructional materials and other supports to enhance career and technical education programs across the state. The three-year partnership program directly supports the Delaware Pathways initiative – an innovative effort helping students develop the academic, technical and employability skills needed for successful, in-demand jobs across Delaware.

Of particular interest to educators, organizations and businesses is access to Discovery Education’s Careers Portal, which houses a wide range of STEM professional interview videos for students – and could be complimented live (virtually or in-person) by a talk with DuPont employees.

“Acquiring academic knowledge, technical skills, and meaningful work experience gives students the freedom to choose their life’s path,” said Delaware Secretary of Education Susan Bunting. “This new partnership provides Delaware students an even better opportunity to develop the skills needed for the careers of tomorrow. I look forward to supporting the progress of this exciting new collaboration.”

“Connecting what is being taught in the classroom to Delaware employers is critical. Resources provided through this partnership will support middle and high school teachers as they build bridges between classrooms and careers for all students. We are thankful for partners like DuPont who share our goals related to STEM- and career-focused education.”

Delaware Department of Education

Delaware Pathways
We hope you had a great time at the 7th Annual Conference on Dec 7-8!
The Delaware Pathways Conference explored progress in the development of a statewide career pathways system that values student identity and empowers young people to enroll in higher levels of education and pursue competitive employment.

The conference highlighted students, educators, community partners and employers who have deployed innovative and effective solutions to support the college and career readiness of our youth.

Here are a few common questions from conference attendees for others who registered:

  1. Can I continue to use Whova to keep in touch with fellow attendees? Absolutely! You can follow up with the people through the in-app messages, e-business card requests, and Community posts.

  1. What other information is posted for registered attendees in Whova? Those who registered have access to all conference materials and recorded sessions. Please click here and enter your event/login credentials to access the materials (event information will be active through February 2022).

Helping Build Environmental Literacy in Delaware:
NOAA Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) Grant
Delaware Sea Grant along with Delaware Association for Environmental Education, Delaware Department of Education, Delaware Nature Society, Stroud Water Research Center, and the Delaware Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education are engaging in a new project to help build capacity for Environmental Literacy in Delaware. This three-year project will work with two school districts and one charter school to develop Environmental Literacy Plans, create professional development for teachers and administrators, and create sample environmental literacy related lessons and activities.

This project will also create a community of practice that will support schools in creating and implementing their environmental literacy plans. This community of practice could include businesses, non-profits, community groups, government organizations, and college and universities.
This project is funded through a NOAA Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) grant.

Sneak Peek! Watershed Education Mobile Lab!
In recent years, the Stroud Center education department has worked hard to continuously and innovatively bridge barriers to the accessibility of our programs. At the onset of the pandemic, we created virtual learning resources and online programs to transport the stream to the screen. Now, we introduce you to our newest addition to bring the stream to you: our Watershed Education Mobile Lab!

Our team has been as busy as a bee — or as busy as a riffle of aquatic macroinvertebrates — designing a trailer outfitted with interactive dry-erase panels, hands-on instructional materials, water-quality monitoring equipment, microscopes, live aquatic insect storage, and so much more. We’re excited to unveil the first sneak peek of this watershed education experience on wheels.

Keep your eyes peeled in 2022 for the full reveal, including a mega-sized, dry-erase biotic index on the trailer’s other side.
