Visuals (from cave drawings to photos, videos and phodeos) are our primary (and primal) communication and memory preservation medium. They’re crucial for selling products or services, and to communicate effectively within organizations.

Historically, businesses have relied on photo or video professionals (photographers, videographers, photo editors, video editors, in-house creative departments, outside agencies, and more recently Social Influencers and Gig photo or video pros) to produce the bulk of their visuals.

The mainstream popularity of authentic user-generated content, the importance of timeliness, segmentation (creating customized versions for different audiences or purposes), scale, and cost efficiencies are changing the equation: Businesses are going DIY – do it yourself – for many of their photo and video needs, leaving only the highest-end visual projects to imaging professionals.

Astute photo and video app developers have latched on to this opportunity to access a large as yet untapped market which offers better stability and revenue predictability than consumers, and are creating apps catering specifically to the DIY visual needs of businesses, ranging from SMBs to enterprises. Some of these apps started life as solutions for consumers before they were tweaked to (also) address the specific needs of businesses; others were developed from scratch with a sole focus on business needs.

The fast-growing opportunity for DIY visual solutions aimed at businesses will be an important topic of conversation in the fireside chat sessions, panel discussions, and Show & Tell demos at Visual 1st and the DIY Video Summit. We’ll explore the ramifications, potential pitfalls, and untapped potential for the photo & video industry at large during both events.

Case in point #1:
At the DIY Video Summit on Oct. 21, we look forward to a fireside chat session featuring Oren Boiman, SVP of Small Businesses and Head of Video Creation of Vimeo and previously CEO of Magisto.

Prior to Magisto’s acquisition by Vimeo in 2019 he transitioned their consumer-focused tool to address the needs of SMBs, a highly successful strategy.
Case in point #2:
Also at the DIY Video Summit we’ll have a fireside chat with Lionel Mohri, VP of Brand Experiences & Storytelling at Intuit, who will share with us how visual storytelling, ranging from professional production to DIY processes, is creating fundamental business transformations in every facet of Intuit’s operations.

Case in point #3:
Visual 1st and the DIY Video Summit will each feature a panel discussion that specially addresses how businesses are seeking to use DIY imaging solutions, and what this means for providers of imaging solutions:

At Visual 1st, Oct. 19-20:
Moving Beyond Consumers – When Businesses Seek DIY Photo Solutions
More and more, consumer-focused photo hardware and software tools are being picked up by non-professionals in the business world, ranging from sole proprietors to global enterprises. And these businesses are getting savvier at deciding which photo tasks to continue to outsource to pros, as opposed to taking advantage of new generation tools to bring them in house. The opportunity for photo tool vendors goes far beyond marketing their existing consumer-focused DIY solutions to business workers. The real prize is developing photo solutions that specifically address the pain points these businesses are experiencing. They are more than willing to pay for pro-grade DIY solutions with a strong ROI.
At the DIY Video Summit, Oct. 21:
Moving Beyond Consumers – When Businesses Need DIY Videos
Videos can be a prime vehicle for businesses, ranging from sole proprietors to enterprises, to implement their communication strategies: DIY videos for marketing, messaging, tutorials or even customer support.
But the tools to create these videos in-house have to enable professional looking results with consumer-like ease, provide the features to address business-specific requirements, and be priced in line with the desired ROI.

How to find the sweet spot?
Case in point #4:
Many of our 38+ Show & Tell presenters this year at Visual 1st + the DIY Video Summit, will give live demos of their innovative solutions that cater to the needs of SMBs or enterprises. Make sure to check out their company or product pages prior to attending (company links are provided for the listed Show & Tell presenters at Visual 1st and the DIY Video Summit). Check them out here and here.

My partner Alexis and I very much look forward to the presentations and discussions at both Visual 1st and the DIY Video Summit!
