Volunteers Make the Holidays Special
|
|
In this season of gratitude, we are appreciative of the many community partners, volunteers and donors who support Fellowship Square in its mission of improving the lives of older adults who struggle to make ends meet by providing them with affordable housing and supportive services. We are grateful that the communities surrounding each Fellowship House came together to ensure that all residents had access to a Thanksgiving meal.

|
At Lake Ridge Fellowship House, residents were invited to participate in two Thanksgiving Dinners on Saturday, November 19 th. The first dinner, at 12:30 pm, was provided by Post 364 of the American Legion. The second dinner, served at 5:00 pm, was offered by Lake Ridge Baptist Church. Both dinners took place off-site with transportation provided for Fellowship House residents. We appreciate their generosity.

On Wednesday, November 23rd, Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, Anthem HealthKeepers and Anthem HealthKeepers Plus teamed up to offer a Thanksgiving celebration for the residents of Hunters Woods Fellowship House. Nearly 200 residents enjoyed a turkey dinner with sides and apple pie for dessert. In addition to volunteers from the church, more than a dozen middle and high-school students from the Vienna Junior Volunteer League helped by decorating the Fellowship Hall, serving the meals, and assisting with clean-up. Special appreciation to Hunters Woods Fellowship House Board Member Mr. Jørn Dalboe for making the arrangements for this festive gathering.

At Largo Landing Fellowship House, residents were treated to a home-cooked turkey dinner and all the trimmings on Thanksgiving Day. This meal was prepared and served by Board Member Lynn Thomas along with a cadre of her family and friends. We are so grateful for this annual tradition.

Reston Home Tour
On Saturday, November 5, almost 600 people spent the day visiting various properties around Reston. The Lake Anne House was featured on the tour and a highlight among the pristine homes on view. One such visitor commented, “I feel so proud to be living in Fairfax County… that something like THIS (Lake Anne House) could be made possible.”
Fellowship Square was proud to be part of this community event showcasing the best homes the Reston area has to offer.

Volunteer Opportunities
Fellowship Square continues to rely on the generosity of volunteers to help sort and deliver food donations to our senior residents. Volunteers (aged 14+) are asked to assemble food from crates and pallets into individually packaged portions, then make them available to residents or deliver them throughout the building.
While many of our volunteer roles take place during the work week, we have added an evening time slot once a month at Hunters Woods Fellowship House and a monthly Saturday opportunity at Largo Landing Fellowship House.

A recent headline caught my attention: Half of Americans Over 50 Are Now Caregivers (usnews.com). People are living longer – and needing help longer. Staffing at home health agencies and skilled nursing facilities are stretched thin and they are finding it harder and harder to hire dedicated and qualified employees.
While Fellowship Square prides itself on providing a quality independent living environment, many of our 850 seniors rely on some sort of help from family or outside agencies that provide assistance with activities of daily living like getting dressed, preparing meals and bathing.
Fellowship Square recognizes the importance of home health aides (families or agency staff) and want to continue to welcome and support them with each visit to Fellowship House. We hope to create new opportunities for support and information sharing among them so that they have a sense of community in the work they do to help keep our residents safe and engaged.
Recently at Lake Ridge Fellowship House, we hosted a Caregiver Appreciation Day, and hope to roll that out at the other properties.
Caregiving is a difficult job – and it is becoming more and more important in the lives of our residents, who are living longer and are able to continue enjoying their lives, even if in a limited capacity.
We are working to meet the challenges of future generations of residents and hope you will join us as we explore new paths.
Thank you for your time, attention and support of Fellowship Square.
With gratitude,

one-quarter of seniors (adults aged 65 and older) report feeling socially isolated and lonely. Data also shows that social isolation increases the risk of dementia by 50 percent. These statistics indicate that senior social isolation needs to be perceived as a serious public health risk.

CONFERENCE SPONSOR AND EXHIBITOR
|
|
2022 Virginia Governor’s Housing Conference
|
|
Fellowship Square attended Virginia’s largest housing event this year! The Virginia Governor's Housing Conference had over 1,000 attendees from many professional sectors in the affordable housing industry. This was a great opportunity to meet potential donors and make new friends in the affordable housing community.
As a sponsor at the conference, Fellowship Square hosted an exhibit where participants learned about our various properties, our proposed expansion, and our mission to provide affordable housing and services for low-income seniors. Many conference-goers were proud of the work Fellowship Square has done and were impressed with how much was accomplished during the COVID pandemic. They look forward to watching for the organization’s future endeavors.
