Celestial events to watch for this month
November 5: Uranus at Opposition
This is the best time to view Uranus since it will be at its closest approach to Earth and will be fully illuminated by the Sun.

November 17 + 18: Leonids Meteor Shower
This annual shower peaks on the night of the 17th and the morning of the 18th. This year, however, the nearly Full Moon will dominate the sky, blocking all but the brightest meteors. You may be able to still catch a few good ones if you view from a dark location after Midnight.

November 19: Partial Lunar Eclipse
Experience a partial lunar eclipse on this day, which occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth’s partial shadow, and only a portion of it passes through the darkest shadow. The eclipse will take place between 1:00 and 7:00am.
Thank you to our partner: Consumers Energy Foundation
For the past fifteen years, we have been able to call the Consumers Energy Foundation our partner. We are so thankful for their continued support over the years when it comes to providing environmental and water-related education to students across the state.

Since 2007, the Institute’s Water on the Go! programs have been delivered to more than 110,000 students throughout Michigan via outreach programs. The key to this success has been partners like the Consumers Energy Foundation and our extensive network of educators.

Water on the Go! programs give students an engaging, hands-on learning experience that will enhance their knowledge about water science as well as an understanding of their impact on water in their local communities and the Great Lakes.

We are excited to share that the Consumers Energy Foundation has recently approved a $450,000 grant to support this important program for the next three years. At no cost to the school districts of Bay, Saginaw, and Midland Counties, Water on the Go! programming will be delivered in up to 320 classrooms per year, resulting in thousands of students experiencing immersive and engaging outreach curriculums.

Students will walk away with an enhanced appreciation for water resources in their community, an understanding of how their actions can help protect and restore water quality, and increased awareness for ecological issues and how they can be a part of the solution.

The Consumers Energy Foundation is the charitable arm of Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider. The Foundation enables communities to thrive and grow by investing in what’s most important to Michigan — its people, our planet and Michigan’s prosperity. In 2020, the Consumers Energy Foundation, Consumers Energy, its employees and retirees contributed over $19 million to Michigan nonprofits.
