Before we shift into tutorials, I want to alert you that I'm taking a long-delayed vacation to celebrate my wife's retirement. We're traveling to New Zealand to see the sights. Because of this, my newsletters will take a break and resume on February 27. I'm on email during the trip, so feel free to say hi!

Media lives at the forefront of technology. Competition is fierce, change is constant and audiences are distracted. Here, I share my thoughts on the future of video editing and the challenges we face. As always, I'm interested in your comments.

Also, for Final Cut editors, I've updated my instructions on how to trash FCP Preferences. This article is one you'll want to bookmark, just in case.

In the news:

Alteon announced the Alteon Accelerator. This provides high-speed uploads to Alteon servers for use in their content management system, along with extensions for Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. I interviewed Matt Cimaglia, CEO of Alteon, to learn more.

My latest webinar - "Advanced Features in Adobe Premiere Pro" - is available in my store. This presented a detailed look at speech-to-text transcripts, creating and modifying captions, simplifying sequences and current problems with motion tracking effects. This is available in both my store and video training library.

Like this weekly newsletter, webinars are also taking a break for the month of February. They will return Wednesday, March 8. It took a while, but I finally figured out how to add a video feed to my webinars. So now, you can see my screen and me during the presentation. I look forward to chatting with you once I return.

Turning to tutorials, I have three this week:

In this video tutorial, I explain what speech-to-text is in Premiere, then show how to create transcripts from your sequences using it.

In this video tutorial, I illustrate a relatively new feature in Premiere which can instantly simplify complex sequences without actually changing your edit.

Motion tracking used to work really well in Premiere Pro, but, recently, something broke. In this video tutorial, I show what motion tracking is, what’s wrong with it, and provide a workaround you can use until this gets fixed.

Our industry is no stranger to change. But, the times we find ourselves in today feel especially pivotal. Similar to the transition from analog to digital, there is a lot happening all at once and much of our hard-learned knowledge no longer seems relevant. We need to learn new skills and develop new ways of effectively telling stories without losing the ability to pay the rent. Even more challenging, we are competing with a new technology that has the potential to replace many of us. These are not times for the weak of heart.

Chat with you again in a month. Until then, stay safe, stay hopeful and edit well.
