Don't Miss BIG Savings on my Favorite Wines!

Written by Winemaker, David Shattuck

We are excited to be running a special on several of my favorite wines from the 2021 vintage: The Grand Island Vineyards 2021 Chardonnay, Symphony, and Vin Gris. All three of these wines are characterized by good varietal character, solid fruit core, and pleasing acidity. The Chardonnay is a delightful medium body white wine that pairs well with a variety of dishes like shrimp ceviche, pork chops, and duck pate. The Symphony pairs well with heavily spiced dishes like Indian or Latin America food due to its slight residual sugar and floral character. The Vin Gris is wonderful as an aperitif, but also pairs well with just about any meat or vegetarian dish. Make sure to stop by and grab these wines before they are all gone.

2021 Chardonnay - See in Store

This wine is a brilliant hay hue with a hint of green in the meniscus. The initial aromas are peach, bartlett pear, corn silk, and fresh crème. The wine opens with a punch of Seville orange on the palate followed by a hint of oyster shell and brioche, while the mouthfeel manages to be both zippy with fresh acidity and juicy at the same time.

2021 Symphony - See in Store

The 2021 symphony pours a delicate straw hue. The initial aromas are pineapple, passionfruit, jasmine blossom, and star anise. The mouthfeel is dense with a playful sucrosity. A fresh burst of acid on the wine's finish is reminiscent of mandarin orange and kumquat.

2021 Vin Gris - See in Store

The wine pours a stunning soft pink hue. The initial aromas are of currant, oyster shell, cedar, and mandarin zest. As the wine opens, ripe notes of strawberry and watermelon intermingle with a hint of herb de province. This wine is pleasingly acidic with juicy mouthfeel and a hint of grip. The finish is long with candied orange peel and a hint of ginger root.

Checking in on the Barrel Aged Red Wines

Written by Winemaker, Ed Seikel

The winter season is when things slow down for us in the cellar, and it's a great time to check in on the previous vintage of barrel aging red wines. We're able to take the time to pull down all the barrels, lay them out, and taste through each barrel of every lot separately, so we can individually rate every barrel of wine. This is a very important step in our process, because it allows us to plan out what we want to bottle, while making sure every wine is going to be up to our standard here at GIV.

After that, we will either rack the wines to tank and return them to barrel, or we will just top off each barrel to remove any extra headspace caused by evaporation, and the barrels will be put back into the barrel room to continue aging until it is time to bottle.

After tasting through everything this year, we were very impressed by our Home Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, and are excited to bring that to everyone as another Salman Family Reserve wine later this year.

Sigh, It's Still Winter...

Written by Operations Manager, Joe Salman

Just before writing this article, I went back to the Bridge News Archives, available on the GIV website to compare March 2022 to March 2023. It seems so long ago that it wasn't very wet in the 2022 winter and weather was unseasonably nice with only a cold snap every once in a while.

Well, we all know this winter is not like the last.

As I stated it has been difficult to find decent outside work days. We still are pruning our later varieties (Chenin Blanc, Petite Sirah, and Cabernets), but I don't feel the same rush as I did last year. The cold and darkness (cloud cover) has really kept the vines from waking up and pushing out. There is very little bud swell and bud break is still weeks away on the earliest varieties (Chardonnay).

I know that the weather is bad outside, but don't let that stop you from coming to Grand Island Vineyards. We have a very comfortable tasting room to try all wines grown here at GIV.

Cheers!
