"The Rung of Truth"

Matthew 3:1-12

At this time John the Baptizer appeared in the desert of Judea, proclaiming, “Change your hearts and minds, for the reign of heaven is about to break in upon you!”

It was John that the prophet Isaiah described when he said, “A herald’s voice cries in the desert: ‘Prepare the way of our God, make straight the paths of God!’”

John was clothed in a garment of camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist. Grasshoppers and wild honey were his food. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him.

When he saw that many of the Pharisees and Sadducees were coming to be baptized, John said to them, “You pack of snakes! Who told you to flee from the coming wrath? Give some evidence that you mean to reform! And don’t pride yourselves on the claim ‘Sarah and Abraham are our parents.’ I tell you, God can raise children for Sarah and Abraham from these very stones!

Even now the ax is laid to the root of the tree. Every tree that is not fruitful will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I will baptize you in water if you have a change of heart, but the One who will follow me is more powerful than I. I’m not fit even to untie the sandals of the Coming One! That One will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire, whose winnowing-fan will clear the threshing floor. The grain will be gathered into the barn, but the chaff will be burned in unquenchable fire.”

*NEW* Agape MCC’s Holiday Series

"Ladder to the Light"

This series based on the visions and wisdom teachings of Steven Charleston, a member of the the Choctaw Nation, former Episcopal Bishop of Alaska, and President and Dean of the Episcopal Divinity School. Our guide will be his most recent book, Ladder to the Light; An Indigenous Elder’s Meditations on Hope and Courage.

We will be climbing the ladder slowly throughout the upcoming holiday season, including Advent, and our ascent will culminate on Christmas Eve. Please join us beginning this Sunday as we make the descent into the Kiva. If you are practicing virtually, you have the advantage of creating your own sacred space and time for our gatherings. It should be a space that evokes cave energy, solitude, and closeness to the earth. We will talk more about that at this week’s gathering. See you in the Kiva.

Greetings,

As we embark upon the holiday season (and cooler weather!), we know there is a need to help those underserved in our community with staying warm and dry.

To that end, City employees with the assistance of our Forest Hill Police Department, are seeking donations of new or gently used coats, sweaters, or jackets for distribution to our needy families between November 15th and December 17th. Items collected will be taken to our elementary schools, David K. Sellars and Harlean Beal by our Police Officers and children there will be given the opportunity to select something that will keep them warm. And while out on patrol, our officers will also supply coats to those families they find in need.

We hope that you can join us and support our efforts to give our kids the gift of warmth and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

You can drop off your donations at Agape' and we will deliver them for you.

Greetings,

As we embark upon the holiday season, we know there is a need to help those underserved in our community.

To that end, City employees with the assistance of our Forest Hill Police Department, are seeking donations of new toys for distribution to our needy families on December 18th.

We hope that you can join us and support our efforts to give our kids the gift of Christmas.

You can drop off your donations at Agape' and we will deliver them for you.

In the end, it may all come down to a single question: so what did you learn? I have no more insight into the meaning of life than anyone else, but I have come to trust in my own experience. I know I am not in charge of this reality. I know I am not the center of the universe. I also know that my time here is not by accident. I am here for a purpose. For a reason. Beyond the positive imprint of my love that I leave behind, my role in this creation is to learn as much as I can. To see the patterns and understand their meaning. To achieve wisdom by embodying humility. I believe this because I know that one day I will be asked: so what did you learn?

My name is Rev Elder Maxwell Reay, and I am delighted to be sharing with you all in this time of advent.

I am in Edinburgh Scotland, and I bring you greetings from the Council of Elders.

I also bring you greetings from my local congregation in Edinburgh, Augustine United Church and The Our Tribe LGBTQI+ ministry.

Philippians 4:4-5

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.

Luke 3:11

In reply he said to them, ‘Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.’

Advent is

A time of waiting.

A time of reflection.

A time of anticipation for what is to come.

We know the story of Christ’s birth.

Born in a stable, nothing grand or glamorous.

But born with Hope

Hope that will help us transform our world.

Hope that will strengthen us to challenge the systems and structures that oppress.

Some of us will have waited and celebrated this gift of life many times.

But for others this will be the first time.

Let this season of Advent be a true reminder that we are all made in the diversity that is the image of God.

A God who was revealed to us a baby – vulnerable but strong enough to survive in the most challenging and difficult time.

We are all:

Beautiful, Diverse, Creative and Complex.

A myriad of Genders, Ages, Faiths, Colours, Sexualities, Races, Voices and Abilities.

Each of us born into a place and time that we did not choose but was given by God.

Like the baby Jesus born into a place and time that was given by God.

We make our way in the world with God, knowingly or unknowingly.

A God that knows, celebrates, and unconditionally loves each of one of us - no matter who or where we are.

Jesus come shake us and remake us so:

that we too can focus our attention on the value of all that is other

That we would learn to always share our coats and food with those who need them.

That the gentleness our actions will have impact.

Jesus is indeed near.

Preparations have begun

The excitement is building.

We ask God to:

Give us what we need to acknowledge the times when get it wrong.

When our coats seem too comfortable to share.

When the food we have is too delicious to give away.

When we are not as gentle as we should be on ourselves and others.

We ask God to:

Give us the strength and humility to work to make this right.

Let this advent be a time when we bring together our hopes and dreams of a truly intersectional community.

Where our diversity is the coat, we share.

Where our diversity is the food, we offer.

Where our gentleness is channeled to challenge individuals, systems and structures that continue to perpetuate racism, sexism, agism, transphobia, homophobia, bi phobia, discrimination based on abilities or class.

Where our gentleness creates a pathway for healing and reconciliation.

Let us pray:

Holy loving Creator God.

As we journey with you through Advent.

Continue to be our guide and source of all that we need.

Open our hearts to all that you offer us each day.

Make it possible for us all share our coats, our food and our gentleness as a symbol of our unconditional and affirming love.

Make it possible for all of us to knowing in our hearts that we can be one together.

Shake us and remake so that every day is a new day with you.

Amen.

Survey Opportunity

Hello Agape' MCC!

My name is Olivia Hucks and I am the community outreach coordinator for Project PASSION, which is a research project led by Dr. Dominic Parrott at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. The project is funded by the National Institutes of Health.  Given the aims of Agape MCC, I think you would be interested in learning about this project.

We know that when people have healthy intimate relationships, their overall mental and physical health is good as well.  Our primary goal is to conduct research that gives back to the LGBTQ+ community. Indeed, we hope that this information can be used to develop culturally-sensitive recommendations and programs to promote healthy intimate relationships for LGBTQ+ people.

Thus, in our project, we want to learn more about what can lead to healthy, and unhealthy, intimate relationships for LGBTQ+ people. Our project focuses on factors that lead to negative health outcomes as well as factors that promote resilience. We are seeking participants for a study that is completed entirely online.

Who is a good fit for the study? The study may be a good fit for someone if:

  • They and their partner are both 21 years or older
  • They identify as LGBTQ+ and are in a relationship
  • They currently drink alcohol (i.e., they are not in recovery)
  • People of all genders and sexual orientations are welcome

What would happen if someone enrolls in the study? We invite all interested people to call or visit our webpage to learn more (see contact information below). Each partner will earn a minimum of $40 for completing questionnaires and meeting with our research staff for a video call (2 hours). Each partner can also earn up to an additional $145 for completing all online surveys (Study 2).

Our team is very excited about this project. We believe that it can provide much needed data that will ultimately help to promote healthier intimate relationships for LGBTQ+ people, which again is one of the most important predictors of a person’s general physical and mental health.

Contact Information: To take part in either research study or for more information, please contact us at:

Best regards,

Olivia
