Giving In
Rev. Tor K. Berg
Our Lenten Journey begins with the ashes being made into a cross on our foreheads; an ancient ritual of the church. In one sense it is a sign that we understand ourselves as creatures not the creator. An acknowledgment that we are not in control. And we have to admit that we grudgingly admit this.

You have heard we repeat that this past year has been the longest Lent we have experienced in our lifetimes. We were asked to stay home and stay safe last March, during Lent. And here we are, still staying home and staying safe. At this point it seems to be good advice for us just to "Give in."
If you would like to contribute your favorite soup recipe to our list, please email the recipe on a word document, to Kristin Smith.
DIY Soup Suppers!
Gathering for soup suppers during Lent has been a long tradition at First Lutheran. How we all enjoyed the crockpots of many different kinds of home made soups, chowders and steaming hot chili. Sadly, we had to suspend our suppers last year due to Covid-19 restrictions. At that time, we certainly thought we would be together again by now, but here it is Lent 2021, and we are still staying safe at home.

As a way of remembering the spirit of our Lenten gatherings, the Fellowship Committee has compiled some of the popular soup recipes from years past. Thank you to the cooks for sharing their secrets, and we hope your families enjoy some cozy soup suppers at home during Lent.
Over the past two years, First Lutheran has brought clean water to over 236 people! That is clean water to drink, wash their hands, clean their dishes, do the laundry, and do so much more. Team World Vision is inviting each of YOU into a season of health, community and purpose in this season of isolation and uncertainty. If you are afraid of training or fundraising, know that YOU CAN DO THIS! Sign up for the 7 Day 6k, the week of May 16th, and move your feet to get children clean water to wash their hands and protect themselves from the spread of diseases like COVID-19. Click here for more World Vision information. Questions??? Contact Kaaren Hatlen at [email protected]

The Comfort of Angels Pasta Dish
* 1 stick (8 T.) butter or margarine
* 8 oz. angel hair pasta
* 3 c. hot chicken broth
* 1 t. (or to taste) freshly ground pepper
* Juice of 3-4 lemons
Melt stick of butter in a 2-1/2 qt. (or larger pan on stove top). Break up the pasta and stir in into the melted butter. Add chicken stock and pepper.
Cover and let simmer on low for 10 minutes until the liquids are nearly gone.
Finally, add lemon juice. Viola – a comfort food classic. You can add other ingredients ate the end, such as vegies, or herbs if you choose.
There is something so basic, delicious and melt-in-your mouth comforting about this simple recipe.
I may substitute rotini or other pasta and use this one pot method especially for two people.

Mother Teresa

An inspirational portrayal of Mother Teresa, a simple nun who became one of the most significant personalities
of the 20th Century. Armed with a faith that could move mountains, Mother Teresa followed her calling to help
the poor, the lepers, the dying and the abandoned children living in the slums of Calcutta, challenging many authorities – including the church – along the way.” Starring Olivia Hussey as Mother Teresa.

MOVIE REVIEW: Please watch the movie prior to our Zoom Movie Review. Mother Teresa is available to watch on Amazon Prime. Our discussion will begin with a review of the main plots of the movie. We will also explore the spiritual themes of the movie.

Book Club!
Discussion Book: The Year of Living Biblically; One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible
March 23, 7:00 pm on Zoom
Discussion Leader: TBA

 Raised in a secular family but increasingly interested in the relevance of faith to our modern world, the author dives headfirst into attempts to obey the Bible as literally as possible for one full year. He vows to follow the Ten Commandments. To be fruitful and multiply. To love his neighbors. To obey the hundreds of less obvious rules: avoid clothes made of mixed fibers, play a ten-string harp; stone adulterers, etc. The resulting spiritual journey is at once, funny and profound, reverent and irreverent, personal and universal.

Questions to Clint Bastin (Book Club Coordinator) or Roger Steinke. Copy of book is available on table outside the library.  The zoom link will be sent on March 22.
Happy Birthday to First Lutheran Church!

Sunday, March 14 is First Lutheran Church’s 135th birthday! Linda Siebert has created a power point presentation for theFellowship Time, immediately following the Zoom worship service. Sharing our Pandemic Story will include the stories and photos you provided about how your life has changed and what you will remember about the year 2020. Please join us after worship on March 14.
Card Shower for Trudy Eichelsdoerfer!

Please help the Library Committee shower longtime member, Trudy with 100 birthday cards for her 100th Birthday on April 1.

Trudy and her family joined FLC in 1964, and she has been an active member for almost 60 years! Trudy taught Sunday school, confirmation, and as a professional librarian, she volunteered as FLC’s librarian for more than 33 years. In 1986, FLC’s centennial, Trudy researched, updated, and authored the church’s 100 year history. Twenty-five years later, in 2011 Trudy updated the book for FLC’s 125 year anniversary.

Trudy’s address is in the church directory. Please direct questions to the FLC Library Committee: Linda Siebert, Ann Aagaard, Donna Gilbery, Marilyn Sides and Katie Pyne.
Thank You!
Dear First Lutheran Church Members,

First Lutheran Preschool would like to thank you for your gift of $3000.00 to keep our doors open. With the pandemic, we have been teaching preschool online since last March. Our number of students dropped significantly along with the tuition cost. Our staff of 7 is now three, all of us working part time.

Registration is starting now for Fall and we are praying for the day that our halls are once again filled with kids, laughter, and those fabulous art projects!  Our preschool is just another way that First Lutheran Church is a blessing to the Bothell community. Thank you again for your continued support.

Beth Bowers
Preschool Director

(In February 2021, the FLC Finance Committee recommended to the FLC Church Council that $3000.00 be gifted to the FLC Preschool from the FLC Reserve Fund.)
The above link will updated with February's financial information after the Finance Committee is able to review the financial statements later in March.
These are anxious and trying times for all of us. Social distancing has changed how First Lutheran provides mission and ministry. We are all eager to have worship and all ministries return to normal.

What has not changed are the expenses for mission and ministry. Thank you to all who have continued their faithful giving.

Listed below are ways for you to share with First Lutheran.
  • Mail in your checks. We are still doing weekly deposits.
  • Set up electronic giving by using the Give Online button at flc.bothell.org, or calling Vanco services at 800-675-7430. Note: there is a one time fee to FLC for the set up of bank to bank transactions. There are approximately 3% transaction fees on all credit card donations, making credit card and debit card giving more effective if combined into a monthly transaction, rather than smaller amounts, weekly.
  • Set up one time or auto payments through your bank’s pay service

Thank you for your faithfulness.
