#BiWeek draws attention to the experiences, while also celebrating the resiliency of, the bisexual+ community. Throughout #BiWeek, allies and bi+ people learn about the history, culture, community, and current policy priorities of bi+ communities.

Did you know…more than half of the LGBTQ+ community identities as Bi+?

Don Schoner’s Celebration of Life

On Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 1 PM, please join Don’s husband, Bobby Strickland, for a time of celebration here at Saint Mark UMC. Wear comfortable clothes and fun colors. There's no minister, no formal program. There will be an open mic and you are welcome to share a favorite story with the group, but it's totally up to you. Bobby will be facilitating the celebration. He will be speaking from his heart, and hopes you do the same.  We will be together for two hours.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hear and see an array of voices and stories that we will be bring to you during the Hispanic Heritage Month. We start with 1968 Chicano Rights Movement  and Sylvia Rivera

How a 1968 Student Protest Fueled a Chicano Rights Movement - This 11-minute video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWWWPW7I0iU, examines how thousands of high school students walked out of classes in East Los Angeles in 1968 to protest inequality for Mexican Americans in the public education system. Among the students' concerns were classes that omitted Hispanic history, a lack of bilingual teachers and a system that steered Chicano students to vocational training rather than college-prep classes.

Sylvia Rivera was born on July 2, 1951 and died February 19, 2002. She’s best known for her advocacy of trans rights; “Rivera was influential in forming the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activist Alliance” (Singleton). As a resident of New York, she was a member and initiator of the Stonewall Riot of 1969. While most people know her for her trans activism, she also, “fought hard against the exclusion of transgender people from the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act in New York and was a loud and persistent voice for the rights of people of color and low-income queers and trans people”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ODJ5gNcGho
