This is how I feel after being a class advisor since 2015

The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

by Shelley Bennett

Lassen High’s “Gold Rush” Homecoming is next week and the ASB class has been busy for the last few weeks brainstorming ideas and planning the details.

The week kicks off on Monday 9/25 with a “Gold Fever” dress up day. Students are encouraged to wear their best 70s attire, including bell bottoms, shirts with wide lapels, and concert tees from the era.

A few of the teachers and I have agreed to a group costume. I can’t give away any secrets, but it includes a famous sitcom neighbor and a caftan.

At lunch, students will compete in a Hula Hoop contest for awards and prizes. There will also be disco music. I remember thinking in the 80s that disco music was really lame. I’ve changed my mind.

Girls Golf will be competing at Wilcox Oaks and Field Hockey travels to Chico for a make-up game.

Tuesday brings “Go for the Gold” where students can dress like an Olympian in any sports attire, red/white/blue, or even just sweatpants and sneakers. The Potato Olympics will take place at lunch and students will put their potato athlete through a series of track and field events, including javelin, sprints, and long jump.

Our Art department is holding a Chalk Art gallery and students will create their own 18”X18” masterpieces on the big cement walls between the 700 and 100 buildings. Volleyball takes on Yreka, JV at 4:30 and Varsity at 5:30.

On Wednesday, “Comedy Gold” is the theme and students will pair up and dress as Dynamic Duos like Shaggy and Scooby, Chip and Dale, Dumb and Dumber, or Hanz and Franz. Our Army recruiter is creating an obstacle course for any Dynamic Duo who accepts the challenge. More awards and prizes will be given!

That night is the big Powder Puff game where the team of Seniors and Freshmen will battle the Juniors and Sophomores. There will be a special halftime performance by the Powder Puff Cheerleaders. The teams have been practicing with their student coaches after school and the competition is fierce. You should hear the smack talk!

Gates open at 6:30 with the game starting at 7:00. Admission is $5 for adults and high school students, $3 for senior citizens and K-8 students. LHS students who have purchased their ASB sticker and have their card at the ticket booth will get in for free! (Buy your kid an ASB sticker! You’ll save a few bucks next week!) There will also be Food Trucks so you don’t even have to cook dinner.

X-Country will be on the run at Fall River High School. (see what I did there…lol)

Students have a choice on Thursday with “Pirates v. Prospectors” or it’s amazing what you can do with a bandana. Seriously, all you need is a bandana, your whole costume can be made with how you tie it and where you place it! There is a scavenger hunt for treasure throughout the day.

The Freshmen Football team will play that night at 5:30 on Arnold Field while Girls Golf has a match at Lake Shastina. Volleyball travels to West Valley for their games.

“Grizzlies go GOLD” on Friday in their finest gold and yellow outfits. The Homecoming parade will begin at 2:12 and starts at the entrance to the back parking lot (Berkeley Street), down Main to Foss Street. The community is invited to sit opposite the high school and enjoy the festivities, which will include performances from the drill team, cheerleaders, and drumline.

The Alumni of the Year will be introduced as well as the Royalty representing their grade levels. Each class has been given a movie to base their float and skit on and I’m sure they will be impressive. The Freshmen (Class of 2027) will bring Indiana Jones to Lassen Co, the Sophomores (2026) chose The Goonies to interpret. Juniors (2025) are exploring a whole new world in Aladdin and the Seniors (2024) will cap it off with a tribute to Captain Jack in “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Please join us that night as the Grizzlies take on the Las Plumas T-birds. We have special gifts for the alumni in attendance, look for our ASB table with the gold sequin tablecloth. Game times are JV at 5:00 and Varsity at 7:30. If you can’t make the parade, we’re going to do it all over again before the game and at halftime.

It’s Saturday and Homecoming week will come to a close with a dance sponsored by the Sophomore Class. Watch the bulletin and social media for more information. Our Swim Team is also competing in the Nor Cal Invitational that day so send some good luck their way.

We are encouraging businesses and private residences to get into the spirit and show their Lassen Pride with outside decorations, like streamers, purple and gold flowers, or supportive signs. Add a little purple and gold to your Friday outfit as well. You can show off your creativity on the Susanville Click & Fix app. It takes just a minute to download and set up an account.

It’s always a great day to be a Grizzly, but there’s something about Homecoming at Lassen High School that makes it even better.

On a side note, it’s Landon Bennett’s 21st Birthday today! Wish him a happy one as he is no doubt studying in one of the many libraries on Cal’s campus. Or maybe not.

It’s a tradition for the Class of 2024 to sign the back of their float

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

Postfire Recovery and Restoration

in the Dixie Fire Footprint

Lassen National Forest has begun a 30-day scoping period, which will last through October 18th, 2023, for the Dixie Fire Community Protection and Swain Mountain Experimental Forest Vegetation Management Project.

The proposed project is designed to support postfire recovery and restoration in the areas burned by the 2021 Dixie Fire within the wildland urban interface, extended community protection zones, and the Swain Mountain Experimental Forest.

forestserviceupdate image

The Pacific Southwest Research Station and the Lassen National Forest are proposing to implement a variety of vegetation and fuel treatments designed to maintain or promote desired stand structure, reduce fuel loads, increase resilience of surviving forest stands to future disturbance, and facilitate forest recovery through reforestation and natural regeneration.

These are intended to reduce the risk of wildfire impacts to communities and critical infrastructure, reduce the potential for future extreme fire behavior, and provide an opportunity to address relevant research objectives in the Swain Mountain Experimental Forest.

The proposed project area includes approximately 48,390 acres of National Forest System lands in Butte, Lassen, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama counties and is located within the Almanor, Hat Creek, and Eagle Lake ranger districts.

It is concentrated around several community areas including Baccala Ranch, Bogart Work Center, Canyon dam, Chester, Coon Hollow, Humbug Valley, Old Station, Prattville, Silver Lake, Warner Valley, the Swain Mountain Experimental Forest, and Jennie Springs research area.

Public involvement is a key element of the land management planning process and your input in this process will help identify if there are issues associated with the project area as well as inform the development of the proposed action. You can view more information about this project at https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/lassen/?project=63425.

The public is invited to attend a virtual meeting to learn more about the project on September 28th, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30p.m. Information about the meeting, including a meeting link can be found on the project’s webpage.

This meeting can also be attended in person at the Almanor Ranger District, 900 E. Hwy 36, Chester, CA 96020.

BLM and LL&TT Looking for Project

Volunteers This Friday and Saturday

The Bureau of Land Management and Lassen Land and Trails Trust are inviting outdoor enthusiasts to help with Lassen County cleanup and improvement projects in recognition of National Public Lands Day.

Events will be held this Friday and Saturday, September 22nd and 23rd, at Biscar Reservoirs, the Modoc Line Rail Trail, and along the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail.

blmvolunteers image

On September 22nd, volunteers will meet at 9:00a.m., at the historic Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Road in Susanville, and then carpool to the Biscar/Modoc Line project site about forty miles northeast of Susanville.

Work teams will pick up litter and perform other light tasks. Biscar Reservoirs are designated wildlife watching sites.

On September 23rd, participants will meet at 9:00a.m., at the Depot and form teams to complete various projects on the Depot grounds and along the Bizz Johnson Trail between the Depot and the Hobo Camp Day Use Area.

The BLM will provide gloves and tools.

Anyone interested should RSVP by contacting the Lassen Land and Trails Trust at 530-257-3252. Lunches will be provided on both project days for those who RSVP. All participants will receive commemorative T-shirts.

National Public Lands Day is coordinated by the National Environmental Education Foundation. Since 1994, NPLD has mobilized volunteers on the fourth Saturday in September to celebrate and care for something we all share, our nation’s public lands.

What started with one federal agency, two public land sites, and 700 volunteers has grown into a national event that brings out hundreds of thousands of volunteers at sites in all 50 states and U.S. territories. From trail maintenance to planting, trash pick-up, and more, volunteers of all ages and abilities roll up their sleeves and work side-by-side.

In the past decade alone, over a million volunteers have donated almost five million hours of their time, worth an estimated $133 million, to improve public lands. These efforts are crucial to preserving our natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

Diamond Mountain south of Susanville from a 1946 Eastman’s Studio Postcard

To Sink Shaft on Diamond Mt.

September 19, 1938

Developing and exploring of mineralized ledges located near Diamond Mountain, five miles south of Susanville, is being promoted by the Susanville Mining Company, formerly known as the Believe It or Not mine.

R. L. Chester, manager, has announced that a one-hundred-foot shaft will be sunk to crosscut three veins which show on the surface, followed by drifting in both directions on the veins.

W. D. Whitsett, superintendent, will be in charge of the operations. F. M. Shaw, geologist and mill operator, will check the work.

Buildings from the abandoned Copper City mine, located on the Reno-Susanville highway near the state line, have been purchased, will be moved to the mill site and rebuilt.

A. Snell, Mark Dolliver of Tacoma, Reoger Stewart of Seattle, Washington, and John Holmes of Susanville with others are interested in the4 company.

Work at the location is progressing.
