Dear Friend,

Haciendo Lío.

As you have probably heard, the government of Nicaragua has confiscated property and basically suppressed the work of the Society of Jesus in that country. The reason? The Society’s outspokenness against human rights violations since 2018.

What is happening to the Jesuits in Nicaragua is a reminder to us that our call to follow Jesus has real consequences. When we pray for the desire to live our lives like Jesus, we also pray for the grace of being able to “hacer lío” (to stir things up), an expression that Pope Francis has himself used before.

Challenging the culture, the status quo, has ramifications. “Hacer lío” is inconvenient, uncomfortable, and dangerous. Our brothers and sisters in Nicaragua can tell us. They are paying the price for their commitment to Jesus and his mission.

What about us? Are we stirring things up? Do we have the desire to “hacer lío”?

If not, do we at least have "the desire to have the desire”?

Let’s pray for each other, and especially for the Society of Jesus in Nicaragua.
Un abrazo,
Carlos Aedo

Eyes to See: An Anti-Racism Examen
For Jesuit Colleges and Universities

With the beginning of the new school year, we wanted to re-share this resource from the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU).

"The practice of the Examen is as applicable to colleges and universities as it is to individuals. This Anti-Racism Examen further focuses on matters of race and racism that are specific to those of us at Jesuit colleges and universities.

"The Anti-Racism Examen has been designed to strengthen the link between personal reflection and institutional action. We hope that you will find it to be a flexible, shared experience among all AJCU institutions."
