New Business Relief Coming Soon

With the passage of the RELIEF Act of 2021 by the Maryland General Assembly, new COVID-19 relief will soon be made available for certain Maryland businesses through the Maryland Department of Commerce.

The new funding will be available through the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund (also known as Commerce's Advantage Maryland program), a flexible and broad-based program which usually funds grants, loans and investments to support economic development initiatives; and through Commerce's Small, Minority and Women-Owned Business Account, which uses proceeds from video lottery terminals at Maryland’s six casinos to assist small, minority, and women owned businesses.

ALODIA BRINGS YOU NATURAL “HAIR-RAISING” SOLUTIONS

Meet Dr. Isfahan Chambers-Harris, owner of Alodia Hair Care in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Isfahan launched Alodia in 2017 and has been helping the community have healthy hair ever since.

Before starting Alodia, Dr. Chambers-Harris was a post-doctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University where she focused on the clinical study of diseases that affect the community, especially the African American community. Isfahan’s work allowed her to realize that several of the diseases the she was researching were aided by people, especially African American women, using harsh chemical straighteners on their textured hair. Struggling with her own damaged, breaking hair and injured scalp, Dr. Chambers-Harris knew that there had to be a better and safer option. Soon, Alodia was created to deliver a science based, natural and organic product that works well for textured hair.

Alodia was experiencing consistent growth leading up to the pandemic. Since their business model focused primarily on e-commerce, they were very well positioned when COVID-19 closed several store-fronts and forced people to shop more online.  In fact, the demand for Alodia hair care products increased so quickly that, according to Dr. Chambers-Harris, Alodia began to struggle to create enough inventory to serve all their new customers. With the help of the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation's Innovation Station Business Incubator, Alodia was able to secure a $20,000 business recovery grant from the County. According to Isfahan, “This grant could not have come at a better time. We completely sold out of all our products and didn’t have the money to increase our inventory to the level needed to fill these new orders.”

Alodia has tremendous plans for the future. This Summer, Dr. Isfahan hopes to begin selling Alodia’s hair care products in “big-box” retailers in Southern Africa as well as beginning distribution with these retailers in the United States. The most exciting prospect for Alodia is this Spring, they will begin a clinical study that will prove Alodia products’ effectiveness for treating textured hair.  This clinical study will be published in some of the top medical journals in the United States and ultimately lead to Alodia receiving a “Process Patent”; making them the only hair care product that can claim it is “Clinically proven to treat textured hair.”

If you have Textured hair and need a natural and organic product to help with hair growth as well as treat your scalp, please visit https://alodiahaircare.com/ for their exclusive products that are backed by science.
