Officers to Be Ordained and Installed
|
Celebrating the Gifts of Leadership
|
New officers elected by the congregation during the Annual Meeting in February will be ordained and installed this Sunday during 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship.
Among them will be Elders, who will serve on Session, the church's governing body, which meets monthly to conduct the business of the church; Trustees, who are elected by the congregation to manage Fourth Church's financial and physical resources; and Deacons, who are often described as "the heart of the church," those involved in the care of the congregation and various outreach ministries.
Join us this Sunday in congratulating them--and in also thanking for their commitment to this church those officers who are concluding their term of service this spring. They have given much of their time and talents to this congregation over the past three years and we are deeply grateful!

Collecting Items to Send to Those in Need
|
When people are displaced by natural disasters and conflict, they often find themselves without the most basic items of their daily life--including such things as washcloths and toothbrushes.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance meets these needs by distributing hygiene kits, and to help with this effort, Women at Fourth is collecting items with which to assemble the kits.
Donation for the kits can be dropped off during Coffee Hour on Sundays or, during the week, at the church reception desk. Please label donations "PDA Hygiene Kits."
For more information, contact
Anne Ellis.

A Three-Week Class with Nanette Sawyer
|
Nanette Sawyer is reprising her book group from fall 2016 with a three-week series exploring how we communicate morally and politically.
Jonathan Haidt's book The Righteous Mind provides an intensely thorough backdrop from which to ponder questions of communicating through reason versus communicating for influence.
Join us to explore further how this might be affecting Fourth Church, our individual faith, and our collective faith.
Time:
Sundays, May 7-21 9:30 a.m.
Place:

Theology of Culture
|
A New Sunday Class with Michael Kazanjian
|
Beginning this Sunday at 11:00 a.m., a new Academy for Faith and Life class will explore "theology of culture." Join Michael Kazanjian for "Theology of Culture, Discipleship, and the Secular Creed."
"
Theology of culture" is a new term for scriptural truths on discipleship, in which disciples share a "secular creed" with atheists and others. For disciples, the creed derives secular wholes from holiness as disciples protect the environment, heal the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, affirm and expand the priesthood of believers to workers and nonbelievers, unify mind and body, prevent or solve problems, and keep the sabbath. We analyze discipline, asceticism, yoga, anniversaries, birthdays, and holidays. This aims to unify the world.
Michael Kazanjian holds a B.A. and M.A .in philosophy and has continued graduate work for his Ph.D. Currently Michael is a philosophy instructor at Triton College, where his teaching has included ethics, world religion, and introduction to philosophy. He has authored two books, Phenomenology and Education and Learning Values Lifelong, and thirty papers and conference presentations in philosophy, sociology, and political science.
Time:
Sundays, May 7-21
11:00 a.m.

Conversations about Racism

Sign Up Now for May Discussions

As we continue our congregational commitment to address issues of racism, we will be offering two important conversation opportunities this month.
On Wednesday evening, May 17, Fourth Church will host one of the conversations about racial equity that are being sponsored citywide by the Chicago Community Trust. To take part in the conversation at Fourth Church on May 17 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 4G (there will be dinner), RSVP by Sunday, May 14 to Vicky Curtiss.
Then during the day on Thursday,
May 18, an "Introduction to Systemic Racism" training will be led by staff of Chicago Regional Organizing for Antiracism, which is a regional partner of Crossroads Antiracism Organizing and Training.
This training on May 18 will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Room 5G and
will provide an opportunity for us to develop common language, awareness, and framework with one another, which will help us have productive conversations about race, racism, and systemic racism.
The cost for this daylong May 18 training
is $25 per person. Please register with Anne Ellis by Friday, May 12. Space is limited, so register early!

Volunteer at Fourth Church
|
There are several ways to get involved in the mission and ministry of Fourth Church. See below for details!
Current Volunteer Needs
Men are needed to serve as Shower Ministry greeters
on Tuesdays from 1:15 to 4:00 p.m., on a rotating schedule at the church.
Bread cutters
are needed to prepare Communion for the 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Sunday services.
A speech therapist or occupational therapist
is needed on a volunteer basis to work with an Urban Farm Intern.
Individually wrapped snacks such as granola bars, applesauce cups, and bags of pretzels--a total of 3,600 snack items a month!--are needed to help fill the nearly 1,200 sack lunches distributed monthly by Fourth Church Meals Ministry. Ensuring we have sufficient snacks is an ongoing challenge. For a list of snacks currently needed, visit the Fourth Church Meals Ministry cart in Anderson Hall during Coffee Hour. Donations can be dropped off at the cart or, during the week, at the church reception desk. Please mark donations "Snacks for Sacks."
To sign up for volunteer opportunities or to learn more about them, stop by Coffee Hour on Sunday morning or email Robert Crouch, Director of Volunteer Ministry.
