Hello Very Much Beloveds!

A little story for you this Friday...a couple of weeks ago, Rev. Christina and I went to our annual (and mandatory) Clergy Conference for the Diocese of Atlanta. Every year (with the exception of the years during covid-tide) clergy gather to learn a little, fellowship a little, and worship together. This year one of the clergy, Ruth Lindberg Pattison, among us shared a book she wrote entitled Celtic Ways to Pray, which I picked up thinking I'd simply add to our church library, as many might find it interesting. I, of course, didn't pay much attention to the book, as the tagline was Finding God in Natural Elements. And most of y'all will excuse me for thinking that, since natural elements involve the outside, this book was probably 'not my jam.'

But darn that Holy Spirit, working in and loving me in spite of this particular block I put in her path. Briefly misplacing my BCP, I picked up the first book on my desk to find a quick prayer for Vestry, and low and behold, I ended up reading Pattison's for a solid half hour. It wasn't a book with prayers while outside (which was what I was expecting), but a book about God reaching out to us in and through everything that is.

I was delighted to read 'initiatives for prayer' which included prayer art projects, prayer fires, prayer as drumming (which my son is learning about in school) and using this to enter into contemplation of and holy conversation with God. I was equally delighted to find sweet stories of great depth, as one of a four year old who having survived her baby sister, understood her own relationship with God in a way that was incredibly 'embodied.' It was so embodied that hearing the story of Moses and the burning bush, said he must have been really excited, saying, "God is here on earth...can you believe it?"

By and large, this isn't a book about any one method, but a book about relationship...our ever-deepening relationship with the Lover of Our Souls. Not only did the author find a way to remind me that God is always looking for our company, however different or unconventional our ways of conversing may be, AND however determined I am to judge a literal book only by it's cover (and sometimes the outside, as well). The Holy Spirit also found a way to remind me that my own efforts to widen and decolonize my own personal spirituality and also point others to God in ways they can access, won't always involve only what I assume to work without checking it out.

So anyhoo...now this particular copy is my book. But we'll get one for the library. And whether you ever check it out or not, know this about everything around you, from people to particles (yes, including pollen) in the air,

"God is here on earth...can you believe it?"

Blessings,

Mo. Nikki+

MOVIE NIGHT

This month, on Friday, Oct. 21, we will be watching A Quiet Place (2018), directed by John Krasinski. “In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.” Join us in the parish hall and enjoy some popcorn and soft drinks - or bring a blanket and a picnic dinner! The movie begins promptly at 7pm.

Trunk-or-Treat and Halloweenie Roast

Sunday, October 30, 5:00 - 7:30

We need trunks for October Trunk or Treating! We want to be sure and have enough “stops” around the parking lot (either side of the church) for our October 30 “Trunk or Treating and Halloweenie Roast.” After supper, we will dismiss those who are distributing goodies from their “trunks” in order to set-up. When everyone is ready, we will unleash the kids.

If you can bring your goodies and a vehicle to distribute them from, please let Doug Adkins know by Sunday, October 23 – either in person at church, or via email at dadkins@bexleyseabury.edu. Remember: no peanut products/products that have processed near peanuts.

Three other things to remember:

  1. We encourage all ages to get into the spirit by dressing up in a Halloween costume/attire.
  2. The church will supply hot dogs, buns, condiments, and drinks. Please bring a side dish of choice to share.
  3. Everyone is invited to bring a carved or painted pumpkin to display for our “Carved/Painted Pumpkin Contest.”

Family Promise

**We especially need overnight hosts!**

St. Gregory's next Family Promise (formerly Interfaith Hospitality Network) week is October 16-22 (we help 3 weeks a year). We belong to this organization of churches in Athens which provides temporarily homeless families who are working their way back to stability with a place to stay for up to several months, giving them and their children much needed assistance. The breadwinners in the family get rides to work if needed. Those who don't have a job have the support to find one. Meals are provided. Family Promise also works to prevent homelessness by helping families who might need a rent payment or a utility payment to be able to continue living in their home. They have helped some families find and purchase a used vehicle. We have this chance to put our faith into action, to walk by faith into a role we maybe haven't experienced yet, but which God is calling us to, like Mother Nikki has so often preached. To feed the hungry and house the homeless, to give hope to those who need it. Contact Annette Bates, bateskannette@gmail.com or 706-255-5839, to learn more.  Thank you for being willing to put your feet into action!

The Sign-up for volunteering is now available.Click here and scroll down to October 16-22.
