Dear Friends,

Wisconsin in the fall is simply breathtaking. It's one of my favorite times of the year. You can plan your fall getaway by clicking on the color report below.

With fall in full swing, we are now less than a month from the November election.  Make sure you are ready to vote by clicking here.

Good luck to several area teams as they head to the WIAA boys' soccer tournament next week. Dominican, Germantown, Hamilton, Homestead, Menomonee Falls, Nicolet, and Whitefish Bay high schools are all headed to the playoffs. Good luck!

As always, if you have any concerns or ideas on how to improve our great state, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone at 608-266-5830 or by email at Sen.Darling@legis.wisconsin.gov.

On, Wisconsin!

Preparing Kids for College

Despite historic funding for public education, less than one-third of students are proficient in English or math. Sixty-four percent of fourth-graders are not proficient in reading. Our state ranks dead last in reading achievement among black students. Hispanic students dropped from 1st in the nation to 28th while white students fell from 6th to 27th.

It's not just parents that should be concerned with these test scores. Taxpayers send almost $18,000 per student to public high schools in Wisconsin. That's about twice the cost of sending the same student to a choice high school. Choice schools are doing a better job of preparing students for college. In fact, students in the choice program are leading their peers in public schools in every category of the ACT test

This session, I worked on legislation to let every parent in Wisconsin decide the best option for their kids. I co-sponsored, Assembly Bill 970, which would expand the school choice program statewide. Unfortunately, Governor Evers vetoed these common-sense bills that would increase opportunities for more students and families statewide.

I'm not giving up. I will continue to fight for parents and students to make sure every child in the state has access to a quality education.

Making Wisconsin Safer

Far too often, local news stories are filled with criminals and killers who have one thing in common - they were out on bail.

It's horrific that Darrell Brooks could drive his car through a parade in Waukesha. He should have been in jail after being arrested for trying to run over a woman with his car. This session, I supported and co-authored legislation that will stop letting crooks off the hook.

I co-authored Assembly Joint Resolution 107 which will allow the people of Wisconsin to amend our state Constitution to allow judges to consider the threat a criminal poses to our communities when setting bail. Constitutional amendments must pass both houses of the Legislature in consecutive sessions before going on a statewide ballot. We have to pass this crucial change again next session so voters can approve it.

I also supported Senate Bill 857 which created a public report that will allow the public to see how judges are ruling. I believe the public deserves to know how elected judges are conducting their jobs.

Our current bail system is broken, Both of these bills will help make our communities safer. It's my hope that we will be able to make them law next session.
