Our Solid Rock
“My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness . . .
On Christ the solid Rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand.”
Edward Mote 1863
These words from the classic hymn may have never been more profound and fitting than they are right now. On a daily basis, we walk around on sinking, shifting sand that changes minute-by-minute. The evening news is wracked with hopeless stories of tragedy and pain. In the last 20 years, suicide rates have increased at a staggering rate, and it’s now become one of the leading causes of death in the United States, a country so richly blessed on many levels. Lies and darkness have infested our culture, and apart from Christ, there really is no hope.
Hal Lindsay said it best years ago: “Man can live about 40 days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air, but only for one second without hope.” And I love Pastor Rick’s definition: “Hope is a confident expectation of future blessing.” This is the message we try to bring into the Gospel Mission and prisons, but it’s also a powerful reminder for the body of Christ who may be struggling with the overwhelming pressures of this life.
Oftentimes, our plans and daily lives are shaken by dire circumstances, and times like these call for the powerful reminders He provides in the Word. Jeremiah 29:11 has carried me through some of the darkest days of my life, and it’s worthy to be reminded:
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
I also love the promises of Revelation 21:4 . . . “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
These two verses force us to lift our eyes from our circumstance and focus them on His perfect plans and coming Kingdom. And while many believers may have these verses memorized, it’s helpful to be reminded, especially when the world around us seems like it’s crumbling.
If you haven’t already, could I encourage you, Christian friend, to memorize at least a couple of your favorite promises from the Bible and meditate on them frequently? Most often, the best thing we can do is listen and pray for our hurting friends, but when the Spirit leads, share these promises judiciously. Resting on the Solid Rock is the only way to navigate the landmines of this fallen world, and reminding each other about this hope, this confident expectation of future blessing, is such a welcome comfort in the midst of the storm!
“When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”
Looking Forward,
Ken Rensi
