Guidance for Self-Care

Identify and use healthy coping mechanisms

Whether it is journaling, taking a walk, a bubble bath, lighting candles, going to the gym, drawing, painting, listening to music, or dancing––do something that helps you process how you are feeling.

Watching TikTok for three hours might help you decompress in the moment, but we want to truly honor our feelings and work through them, and TikTok, YouTube, and social media generally work as avoidance tactics instead of effective coping mechanisms.

Connect with friends and family

Seek out the people who love you and the people you love in return. Share how you are feeling with those you know will provide you comfort and peace.

Avoid overexposure to media

It is important to be aware and having knowledge can help you regain a sense of control, but repeatedly reliving the event through media can cause further stress and negative flashbacks. Tune out!

Don't forget about your physical health

Mental, emotional, and physical health are all intertwined. It is easy to stop taking care of our physical health when we are distressed, but this increases our mental and emotional pain. Try ensuring you are getting proper nutrition, hydration, exercise, and SLEEP!

Seek help if/when you need it

It can be extremely scary asking for help, and in our society, we are often told that we should be able to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and do everything alone. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Please don't hesitate to use the campus resources listed above.
