Family Conferences

This week, families and teachers will take time together to learn how to support their child’s work in the classroom. I didn’t realize until I became a parent that sometimes both families and teachers may be a bit nervous about this age-old tradition. Each person may wonder what to expect. What should I share? What should I keep to myself? Will the teacher/family like me? Does the teacher think the best of my child and my family? Likewise, does the family think the best of the teacher? So many questions. So little time. In 30 minutes, the conference has ended. How do we make the most of the time? How do we each share what we know? How do we work together on behalf of your child?

At WMS, you can expect to learn about where your child developmentally (socially and academically) is today and what the goals are for the coming months. You will learn about not only the assessments that have been performed and how your child compares to other children their age, you will also learn about how they are managing socially. Have they made friends? How long do they cry after you leave them in the morning? Are they reserved? Do they participate in lessons and share their thinking? Are they as gregarious as they are at home? In other words, you will learn about their social and emotional development. You will learn more about who they are when you are not present and when they are in a larger group. Sometimes those pictures align; they can also be quite different.

What you can be assured of is that we know your child. WMS is different from many schools in that we prepare lessons and activities based on the children in each class rather than the simply the required curriculum. We are able to adapt based on the pace of learning for each child. We take into account their eagerness to learn, their sensitivities, and their challenges. We look forward to meeting with you and learning from you later this week. Thank you for partnering with us!

NEWS & NOTES

Car Line Drop-off Reminders

As always, we thank you for helping to keep our morning car lines running smoothly and safely.

Primary Car Line & Primary/Elementary Before-Care

If you are arriving early for Primary drop-off, please leave the spaces in front of the Great Room open until 8:30 a.m. Do not pass the first car in line unless you are dropping your child off for before-care. After 8:30, the vehicles at the front of the Primary car line can move all the way forward to the Great Room entrance.

All Levels

  • Please abide by the posted speed limit (8 1/3 mph) at all times.
  • Please arrive by the following times to ensure that your child is on-time for school and does not miss valuable instructional time. After these times, please park your vehicle and walk your child to their classroom. Thank you!
  • Elementary/Middle School - 8:30 a.m.
  • Primary - 8:45 a.m.
  • Toddler - 9 a.m.

School Pictures - October 18 & 19

We are excited to share that Ann Deas Photography will be returning to WMS next week (on October 18 and 19) to take student portraits.

Photos will be taken outdoors. After the photos are processed, parents will be provided with a link to view proofs and purchase photos directly through the website. (No orders or payments will be processed through WMS.) If we are unable to take outdoor photos on either of the scheduled dates, October 25 will be our rain date.

Each student will be photographed individually. These individual photos will be combined into group composites, which will also be available for purchase.

Halloween Information

The WMS Halloween Parade is returning this year! The parade, for students in Primary, Elementary and Middle School classrooms, will take place on Thursday, October 27 at 9:30 a.m. near the soccer field. (Toddler classrooms will hold their own, less scary, events!) Children should be dropped off in car line that day already wearing their classrooms. Please see Bloomz for classroom-specific information about celebrations after the parade.

As you and your child plan their costume, please take into account the following school guidelines:

  • No weapons of any kind are allowed to be part of a costume.
  • Costumes may not depict blood, guts or gore.
  • Costumes may not depict stereotypes of any group or culture.
  • Because our youngest students will be in school that day, costumes must not be frightening to small children.
  • Hair color and makeup should be applied at home and not be brought to school.
  • Students should arrive at school in costume.

If you have any questions about appropriate costume choices, please let your child's teacher know. Your child will change out of their costume after the parade, so please send in a complete set of clothes for them to wear for the remainder of the school day.

CO-OP CORNER

As we are nearly halfway through our second month of school, we hope you are finding fulfilling opportunities to connect with our school community through the Co-op Program. Please continue to submit your hours using this form. If you are made purchases for a classroom teacher than you plan to claim for co-op hours, please save your receipts and submit them to co-op@wmsde.org. As always, if you have suggestions regarding how you would like to support your child's classroom through Co-op, please reach out to your child's teacher. Thank you!

Co-op Opportunity: Learn Commons Support

We are looking for a volunteer who is able to dedicate a few hours per week in the Learning Commons. We need assistance checking in returned books, placing returned books back on the shelves, organizing shelves and adding labels to new books. If this Co-op job interests you, please reach out to markia_inge@wmsde.org to sign up.
