Updates from our
Head of School

Hello Marblehead Community Charter Families,

One of the local organizations we support is My Brother's Table in Lynn. They have provided over 2.4 million free meals just since the start of the pandemic. Last year, we participated in their annual walk to support the work and MCCPS raised more money than any other school that participated. This year we are striving to top the amount raised last year. Help us reach that goal. Please click the flyer below to donate and please plan to participate in the walk on October 23.

It has been so nice to have parents visit at lunch or at our morning meeting. Feel free to join us for Music Mondays at 7:45am or any other day of the week where we have student presentations, faculty presentations, or community games.

This week there has been so much chatter and rumors about recess. I will attempt to set the record straight. Recess is an essential part of our program at MCCPS. All students in grades 4-8 participate in two, daily recess periods. We believe that these movement breaks provide opportunities for students to play and get some fresh air and exercise that then set students up for success in the classroom. Each recess has at least eight staff members outside supervising the students. During the first six weeks of school members of the faculty have been observing and taking note of the interactions at recess. A group of faculty members proposed some adjustments to recess that we put in place this week. We have designated portions of the field to the lower school (students in grades 4 and 5) and the upper school (students in grades 6-8). In response, we have received many words of thanks from parents who have children who feel much safer at recess with these new procedures. Over the course of just this week, we are encouraged by the increased number of students participating in organized games with grade-level peers. As with anything new, we will observe and see how recess is going. After a few weeks, if additional adjustments are warranted, we will proceed accordingly. While we value input from the community we also reserve the right to make changes in the name of school safety without first holding a community meeting. We appreciate the support you provide us to ensure that all students are safe at school.

We are also committed to creating structured ways for our older students in grades 7 and 8 to mentor and interact with our students in grades 4 and 5. We have a mentor program that begins with students in grade 7 be assigned to mentor students in grade 4. This relationship continues for two school years. We will also create leadership opportunities for students in grade 7 and 8 to apply to be student leaders at recess to assist the younger students with the organized activity/game.

There is value in these cross grade level interactions. They need to be properly organized and supervised and we will continue to create these opportunities.

It looks like an indoor recess for Friday with the predicted rainfall. Let's hope the storm system passes through quickly.
