Dear Cancer Prevention and Management SIG Members,
It has been a wonderful and rewarding two years serving as Chair of the Cancer Prevention and Management SIG. I have enjoyed collaborating with such dedicated members who are enthusiastic about advancing the SIG’s mission in behavioural medicine and cancer research. Together, we made significant strides in this critical research area.
As I transition to the immediate past chair, I would like to welcome the new Chair of the CPM SIG. Dr. Rebecca Beeken is an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds. Her academic background is in behavioural science and health psychology, and her primary research interest is in behaviour change for cancer prevention and control. She has been highly involved in the SIG over the past several years in various leadership positions and her passion for behavioural science will contribute to a thriving SIG. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Rebecca Beeken in her new role!

Dear Cancer Prevention and Management SIG Members,
I am delighted to be taking on the role of Chair of our SIG. I have been part of the SIG for 5 years, having first joined as Secretary, and then acting as Deputy Chair for Linda over the last 2 years. It has been a pleasure to watch the SIG grow and develop, and to have the opportunity to meet so many brilliant researchers via the SIG. I’m looking forward to meeting more of you over the next couple of years, both at our webinars and, hopefully, in person at the ISBNPA Annual meetings. I want to take this opportunity to thank Linda for all of the hard work that she has put into the SIG. Linda has been an excellent Chair over the last few years and she will continue to work with us as immediate past-chair.
We have some exciting opportunities and events coming up over the next little while. The deadline is approaching for our Seed Funding Call. This has been developed to assist ECRs and/or senior PhD students with a research initiative or project and/or to collect pilot data to inform future research endeavours. Funding of up to $1,450 USD is available, and the deadline is Sept 18th. We’ve had some great applications for this over the last 2 years, and we’re looking forward to supporting a new project in the area of cancer prevention and management. We also have an upcoming webinar on September 25th. Associate Professor Nicolas Hart will be presenting on the important topic of ‘How to recruit patients with advanced or rare cancers into research studies’. Our members raised this topic as something they wanted us to cover, so please do get in touch if there are any other areas that you would like us to host webinars on in the future. Similarly, we are always keen to hear from our members, so if there are things you would like to see us do going forward, or things you’d like us to do differently, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We would also be delighted to hear from anyone who is interested in putting together a symposium on Cancer Prevention and Management for ISBNPA 2024, which will take place in Omaha. Submissions will be open soon so keep an eye out!

CPM SIG Business Meeting
It was great to see everyone in-person in Uppsala! During the ISBNPA Annual Meeting 2023, the Cancer Prevention and Management Special Interest Group (CPM SIG) held an engaging business meeting. The session covered various topics, including a review of the SIG's achievements over the past year and its growing presence at annual events. An exciting area of interest discussed was "Prehab" in oncology research, focusing on the collaboration of three key pillars: exercise, nutrition, and mental well-being. The meeting also addressed the challenges of recruiting difficult populations into research and the importance of including advanced cancer cases. These discussions highlighted the SIG's commitment to advancing cancer prevention and management strategies.

Early Career Researcher/PhD Student Seed Funding | |

Emily Hill, PhD, RDN, the 2022 CPM SIG seed funding recipient, is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus working on the co-design of a survivorship nutrition program for individuals with overweight or obesity and a history of cancer. The goal of her project is to develop and implement a nutrition component within an existing clinical exercise oncology program. As part of the co-design process, Dr. Hill interviewed program delivery staff, experts in survivorship care, and individuals with a history of cancer to create the integrated program. Results from her seed funding project were used to inform the program curriculum and have laid the groundwork for a proof-of-concept intervention that will begin in early 2024.

Frontiers in Cognition Special Issue Call for Submissions
Outgoing CPM SIG Chair, Linda Trinh, is serving as a guest editor for an upcoming special issue in physical activity and cancer-related cognitive change in Frontiers in Cognition. Studies evaluating traditional and alternative modes of exercise, non-exercise and lifestyle physical activity, and sedentary behavior alongside standard neuropsychological tests, novel methods of cognitive assessment, patient-reported cognition, or neurobiological/neurophysiological measures are welcome. Consider submitting your work for inclusion in this special issue! Submissions are due September 12, 2023. More information can be found here.
