Chapter 8: Checkmate

Sit Down Before Reading Cover.png

Sit Down Before Reading is an epic medical memoir unlike any you've ever read. This unbelievable story of stories is unfolding in near real time. That means the conclusion of this tale isn't written yet... because it hasn't happened yet. The story I'm telling will challenge the medical establishment to reexamine life with a debilitating disease, send reverberating shockwaves throughout the disabled community, rewrite the rulebook of healthcare (God willing), and potentially change your entire future. I recommend you buckle up and hang on, it’s going to be one hell of a rip-roaring ride. A new chapter releases every Wednesday here:

David, I didn’t know what to do. Which direction to turn. Where to hide. I considered taking shelter in my memories, assembling, sorting, and then organizing them into a majestic quilt of my 53 years in this world. But first I needed to play chess. With the Devil. Chapter 8: Checkmate releases today along with a preview for Chapter 9. Below is the direct link to the home page of Sit Down Before Reading: A Memoir where all available chapters are displayed. Since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, I’ve hiked precipitous trails in the Himalayas, camped in the remote Sahara Desert, and trekked with elephants in sweltering Thai jungles. All presented challenges, from endurance to balance to heat. But nothing quite compared to the obstacles I had to cope with when a surprise relapse struck in Italy. This is how I leaned on Horace’s advice and we seized the moment, learning an essential tip to navigating life with a disability. And for those curious about author EB White’s glowing review of my 4th grader prose, you can read my “improved” ending to his book Stuart Little.

As you’ll read, this chapter is vintage goofball Dave, as I detail—in over-the-top dramatic fashion—the time when Laura and I had accidentally locked ourselves outside of our inn. Naked. In broad daylight. Just as my Viagra had kicked in. Oh boy! But that silly story has a critical lesson, one that I put into play in the most unusual way to save my life. We are nearing the end of Part I of Sit Down Before Reading, with a final chapter coming next week that will reveal the root cause of all my disability. I expect a number of you have already cracked the case (congratulations!) or at least have strong suspicions. But even Sherlock himself wouldn’t be able to predict what comes next in Part II. Be active, stay fit, and keep exploring!

Sincerely,

Dave Bexfield

p.s. Soon the stakes of my words are going to be ratcheting up. Way up. Because I’m not writing this book for me. I’m writing it for you.
