From the Pastor
Advent. A time of waiting, hoping, preparing. . .
Waiting? For what?
For the fulfillment of Christ’s redemption here on earth.
For peace among all nations, including our own.
For an end to violence and oppression.
For a time when there will be no more crying,
no more pain,
no more cancer diagnoses,
no more mental illnesses,
no more pandemic.
For a time when there will be no more hatred,
no more bigotry,
no more racism,
no more “isms” at all.
For a time when there will be no more killing,
no more guns,
no more bombs,
no more murders,
no more weapons of mass destruction.
For a time when there will be no more suffering,
no more natural disasters,
no more hunger,
no more loneliness and despair.
For a time when all shall know the love of our creating and redeeming God.
For a time when all shall share that love freely with others,
without regard for personal gain.
Hoping? For what?
For a time when no one lives in fear,
when no one acts and reacts out of fear.
For a time when truth is told and trust abounds,
and when we lean on one another for support,
and receive support from one another . . . .
for a time when all are treated equally with justice and mercy,
for a time when all know God’s unending love.
for a stress-free and anxiety-free world.
That we can be better people, stronger people, more loving people,
by God’s grace. . . .
Preparing? For what?
For Christ to come again and set all right with the world.
For the light of Christ to shine in our hearts and in our world.
For the day when we will rest in God’s arms of love and grace.
For the role that God has for us while we are still on this earth.
May your Advent be filled with the hope of God’s promises to you in Christ Jesus.
My you find in all these days love and peace . . . and enduring hope.
With love and gratitude for you all,
Mindy

FAITH AND COMMUNITY CLASS
Afghanistan and the Refugee Crisis
As we prepare to welcome and support a refugee family from Afghanistan, the First Presbyterian Afghan Refugee Committee has invited Dr. Joe Arlinghaus, an expert on Afghanistan and friend of Jean Cary, to speak to the Faith and Community Class on this Sunday, December 5 at 9:30 a.m. in Watts-Hill Hall. He will share about Afghanistan’s history and what led to the refugee crisis.
Dr. Joe Arlinghaus is a Kentucky native who joined the Peace Corps after college and served for two years in Nepal (1965-67) as a high school teacher. He later studied Hindi, Urdu, Persian, and Pakhto languages and received his PhD in History from Duke University, where his interest in South Asia and the Middle East led him to write a dissertation on the early history of the Afghan tribes. While working as an Army civilian at Fort Bragg for 30 years, he functioned as a cultural analyst responsible for Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. He deployed to Afghanistan eight times between 2002 and 2011; and has lived, studied, and taught in South Asia for a total of seven years.

LECTIONARY CLASS
Sundays in the Robert Daye Meeting Room (East Parlor) and via Zoom
9:30 a.m. ZOOM LINK
The class will begin at 9:40, preceded at 9:30 by sharing of news and concerns, and will end by about 10:30.
On December 5: When the Lord looked favorably on the people, who heard the word of God? The emperor in Rome? The Governor? The rulers or the high priests in Jerusalem? No, the word of God came to a strange man in the wilderness. Who will hear (and respond to) the word of God in our time?
On December 12: Is it good news or bad news that God is coming soon? According to John the Baptist, that depends on whether you are wheat or chaff.
For phone access (audio only), call 253-215-8782.) If you need a copy of the handout of scripture readings, contact David Smith.

Evictions Court Watching
Durham is facing an evictions crisis, and Durham CAN wants to do something about it. When a tenant receives an eviction filing, they go before a magistrate at the Durham County Courthouse. An eviction filing stays on the tenant’s record for 7 years even if the tenant is not evicted, and it has a negative impact on getting a job, finding another place to live, and getting credit. CAN is organizing teams for "court watching" to monitor this legal process. We have to opportunity to provide visible support for them in the courtroom as well as point eligible tenants to places where they might receive rent money. CAN trains everyone before they engage in court watching, so we know the protocol and what to watch for. If anyone is interested in this important way to address evictions in Durham, please contact Jane Williams, janepsych1@mac.com.
Durham CAN is seeking to understand the perspective of landlords in the matter of evictions. CAN has initiated a city-wide listening campaign in order better grasp the needs and challenges of being a landlord when tenants are unable to pay the rent. No matter if you rent out 1 or 2 units or hundreds of units, we would like to hear from you. If you would like to share your experience as a landlord, please contact Susan Dunlap, sjd4@duke.edu.
